Session 19 15-17/12/4708 To Scarwall
15/12/4708
PCs head north & east across the Cinderlands, sleeping in a shallow cave on the edge of the Mindspin Mountains.
16/12/4708
Wake to snow blowing into the cave. Vemi Diaquani creates a Shadow Road through the Shadowlands to speed the journey... On the way they encounter ghost Shoanti who warn them to detour round a ruin ahead filled with ghostly orcs. They pass it safely, but Kaz has the group investigate a huge thorn tree just off the road - with disastous results. Barely escaping the wraith & spectral hordes of Zon-Kuthon they flee back into the real world, where the thorn tree's real analogue glares at them menacingly. They trek north a few miles in bitter weather and sleep overnight in an enchanted hut created by Vemi.
17/12/4708
The day dawns cold, but bright and clear. The heights of Scarwall can be glimpsed now, only a dozen miles away at the eastern edge of the Kodar mountains. Heading uphill the group are nearing Scarwall when they attacked by a ferocious Gug, which injures Durnhelm before Marie rips it apart. The Brotherhood of Bones arrive and greet them, escorting them to Sial's Tower of Bone (concealed in a welcoming ravine) for a rest. Then the group ascend the ridgeline to catch their first glimpse of Castle Scarwall, vast and sinister, rising from the mists of a caldera lake.
Consulting with the Brotherhood, the group decide to take the Barbican that guards the high walkway over the lake from the orcs lairing there. Seven orc warriors, apparently set there to guard against the forces of Kazavon, prove no match for the heroes. Seeing that the spell upon Scarwall does not affect the Barbican and that the orcs were apparently left alone by the undead, the group decide it should make a good campsite.

Session 15: RL9 Maidens in the Temple, Brotherhood of Bones 14-19/11/4708 AR
The group oars out of the Vivified Labyrinth on the barge and the receding tide, putting in a mile down the coast just after midnight.
14/11/4708
They head back east to Trail's End to stay with the Soldado family.
At dawn when the gates open, Naglatha and Fane Korvaski acquire a handcart from an apple seller to carry Vemi's body into the city, while Vencarlo, Neolandus & co stay at Trail's End. They talk their way past the Gray Maidens at the bridge and head through town to the Temple of Pharasma, where Bisophess Keppira agrees to try to raise Vemi.
The ritual takes an hour and is successful, but just as Vemi is raised, Gray Maidens led by alive-again Oriana burst in and attempt to arrest them! Naglatha swiftly shoots down Oriana; Keppira calms two Maidens and Korvaski kills another as the PCs flee, evading the Maidens and taking refuge in the catacombs where once Rolth laired. At nightfall Naglatha sneaks out to rendezvous with Kaz Anders, passing through the sewers and swimming the Narrows of St Alika to meet him at his garret in Old Korvosa. They use Dimension Door to return to the mainland.
The party meet up and head through the streets to the docks of Midland, where they wait overnight.
15/11/4708
At dawn Kaz is able to get a good view of East Dock and D-doors over with Naglatha & Fane Korvaski, while Vemi disguises himself as a fishmonger and crosses the bridge to East Shore unobserved.
The group rendezvous at Themaneuxus Academy where they ask the gnome wizard Tempest Geezelbottle about various magical goods and services. During discussions Tempest is called away to another client - the Zon-Kuthonite Cleric Laori Vaus has come to collect her newly augmented Spiked Chain! Laori is taken with Fane Korvaski, and offers to hire him for an expedition into the Cinderlands in search of a lost artifact, the sword Serithtial that can defeat Ileosa. Naglatha talks with her and offers to join forces with her group. They arrange to meet at midnight in two days' time at the statue of St Allika on St Allika Street, Old Korvosa.
16-17/11/4708
The group lie low for two days at the Soldado house, unmolested by the local Scazarni despite many wanted posters promising rewards for their capture. With the plague over, the quarantine on Old Korvosa is being lifted at last.
18/11/4708
Just after midnight Laori turns up at the statue of St Allika with her companions in the Brotherhood of Bones - Shadowcount Sial and his chain devil companion Asyra. They disuss plans; according to their divinations the sword Serithtiel still lies inside undead-infested Castle Scarwall, where Mandraivus of Lastwall defeated Kazavon centuries ago. Laori wishes to separate Ileosa's chocolate from Kazavon's peanut butter - or vice versa. Vemi reckons that the Brotherhood of Bones seek the re-assembly of Kazavon from his various relics, but for now their interests seem to coincide.
Laori casts Air Walk on everyone so they can return to Trail's End unseen. At dawn they buy horses from a local Varisian dealer, then head west away from Korvosa, staying the night at a country inn where Laori really gets her hooks into Fane Korvaski...
19/11/4708
Next morning the group heads on, reaching the small town of Harse that evening, and taking the ferry across the river into town. Vencarlo leads them to the Blackbird Ranch house of his old friend and adventuring companion Jasan Adriel. Kaz Anders is reunited with a delighted Trinia Sabor. Jasan's wife serves an excellent meal (the beer a little rough), Jasan chats about their old party the Blackbirds - Vencarlo & Jasan the only survivors; after a falling out over dwarven relics the others vanished a season later in the dungeons below Kaer Maga.
After dinner Jasan leads everyone downstairs to see his cellar brewery, where they can discuss plans away from the ears of Jasan's family. Vencarlo plans to take Neolandus to seek sanctuary with the dwarves of Janderhoff, while the main group will proceed to Sirathu on the edge of Korvosan territory, then up the Storval Rise to Kaer Maga, hopefullt re-equipping, and possibly seeking the Blackbirds' lost treasures. Then on through the Cinderlands to the Orc-ruled Hold of Belkzen, where lies cursed Castle Scarwall and their goal. But rumour has it that the Shoanti tribes of the Storrval Plateau are gathering for war against Korvosa...

Devargo tells them that Eel's End has been burned down and his people massacred. Gorum's Workbench
Formerly Lavender perfumier.

"Gorum's Workbench" - it will have a shrine to Gorum incorporated. I will need someone to manage it since I don't have much time between workouts and the guard... and saving Korvosa from itself... and occasional bouts of personal training for the ladies. Someone Ex-Guard would be good...
GM: Durnhelm's first staff recruit is Cohl, a hulking Shoanti mercenary and priest of Gorum. He certainly has the physique and physical prowess, but looks rather initimidating for Durnhelm's targetted clientele of wealthy High District ladies with too much time on their hands, and despite Durnhelm's posing initial business is very slow, until he's approached by Deanne, a Chelish ex-Guards Corporal he knows slightly - rumour has it she quit the Guard when it looked like she was likely to be conscripted into the new order of Gray Maidens, and is consequently at a loose end.
"You know Durnhelm, you need someone less scary looking to get the ladies coming round... how about it?"

Cohl, priest of Gorum (Bbn 1/Clr 3) |
Deanne, ex-Korvosan Guard (Ftr 2) |

Sir Jereth Rogare just killed Dr Davaulus upstairs; Davaulus' blood-splattered notes have more evidence of his complicity in spreading the plague. Sir Rogare would like the truth made public, but he's already late for his rendezvous to exit the city (so probably some self-flagellation for him tonight...), and will defer to you if you want it kept quiet. Several enemies escaped during the fighting upstairs, including the Gray Maiden corporal, the nurse at the front desk, and possibly more Maidens and Physicians - "it got a bit confused up there...". At any rate Sir Rogare thanks you for your assistance and asks you to deliver Dr Davaulus' notes and any other info you found to the Temple of Abadar to help them fight the Plague.
While Kaz and Naglatha are away alerting Field Marshal Kroft and the Temple of Pharasma, Vemior would like to take the time to do a more thorough search of the building.
"Durnhelm, care to wander with me and see if we can't augment our wages?"
Vemior's aware that there's a couple of rooms in the temple he didn't so much as look inside (one immediately to the left of the lift- one, I think, on the right-hand side of the catwalk room) and another that was only glanced briefly- opposite Rolth's chamber. So he believes it probably wouldn't hurt to backtrack through the complex looking closely for further evidence of conspiracy (or valuables) before heading up to search the second floor.
GM: Vemi & Durnhelm search the temple of Urgathoa. The storage chambers south of the catwalk/blood vats chamber hold only barrels of water, kindling, and long stirring poles, and rubble in the eastern one. The room to the north of the temple antechamber (turn left from the lift as you enter) has cabinets and low benches, four beaked plague masks and leather doctors' coats hang from hooks; in the cabinets are more robes, boots, wide-brimmed hats, and the solid canes/clubs the physicians carried. Behind the western cabinet's glass door are four healer's kits and 23 large black onyx gems worth 50gp each, so 23x50=1150gp total. At the back of the cabinet are four identical potion flasks which radiate magic.
Naglatha Kaz & Sir Rogare inform Marshall Croft what has transpired, she seems shocked but perhaps not altogether surprised, given what Rogare already told here, and sends a squad to secure the building, while runners inform the temples of Abadar and Pharasma of the uncovered corruption.
Sir Rogare thanks Naglatha and Kaz one final time before mounting up with last surviving armiger and galloping out of the city to catch the tail end of the departing Hellknight column returning to Citadel Vraid. Priests of Abadar including Ishani Dhatri come to attend the Hospice; some of the more robust plague sufferers are evacuated. Ironically, with no remove disease spells available, it's deemed best to leave those worst afflicted in the hospice, with water and prayers to ease their passing. Ishani thanks Durnhelm & Vemi gravely; they notice him sneaking a free 'remove disease' onto a dying young boy when none of the other priests are looking. The spell fails - Ishani sighs sadly as the boy expires, and closes the youth's eyes.
Marshall Croft files a report to the Castle, in which the PCs' role is diplomatically downplayed - essentially Kaz, Vemi, Naglatha & Durnhelm acting as assistants to the over-zealous Hell Knight Sir Jereth Rogare, helping him to defeat the plague cult, but also saving several of the Gray Maidens from summary execution at his bloody hands (ie almost the opposite of what actually happened.)
With Davaulus and Lady Andaisin defeated, the unnaturally swift propagation of the Blood Veil ends; over the next two weeks it begins to stutter out as the plague comes under control in most areas, though remaining well entrenched for a while in the overcrowded tenements of quarantined Old Korvosa. The word from the castle is that the Queen was duped by the nefarious Dr Davaulus, in league with the cult of Urgathoa; the Gray Maidens either had no knowledge of what was going on, or were under magical compulsion. Surviving Physicians are summarily tried and executed en masse, while the Gray Maidens are found innocent of wrongdoing (and will be offered counselling for the trauma they suffered).
Not everyone believes that the Queen was innocent, for Davaulus was known to be an old associate of her Arvaxi family in Cheliax, but the city is too wounded to contemplate another uprising. And the Gray Maidens swiftly become more prominent on the streets, replacing the departed Hellknights and enforcing brutal justice against lawbreakers.
Justice Zenobia Zenderholm tries Jolistina Susperio for mass murder at Carowyn Manor, and treason through plague-spreading. Jolistina is found guilty and sentenced to be hung, drawn and quartered, much to her delight: "I'm coming, Rolfie! I'm coming!"
The con artist Vendra Loaggri is tried by a lesser arbiter on charges of fraud, plague spreading, and manslaughter through depraved indifference. She is convicted on the fraud charge; Vendra's lawyer successfully argues that there is no proof that anyone contracted Blood Veil through her actions, and that those left uncured would either have died anyway, or else had the money to cure themselves magically. Vendra is sentenced to ten years' Indentured labour. The prosecution appeals the verdict; Senior Arbiter Zenderholm doubles the sentence to twenty years. Vendra is sent off to spin yarn instead of yarns.
As the plague dies down, the four heroes - Kaz, Vemi, Naglatha and Durnhelm - receive thanks for their many efforts. Tayce Soldado, whose daughter Brienna was saved early on, organises a large dinner in their honour at Trail's End, attended by many of the local Varisian families who bring small gifts. Among those attending are the Mirakova siblings, Deyanira and Ruan - Deyanira starry-eyed for Vemi; Ruan mostly recovered from his tortures, but still pale and withdrawn. Deyanira tells everyone what happened; Kaz, Vemi, Naglatha and Durnhelm all receive gifts worth 250gp each.
Eries Yelloweyes and other Vault dwellers thank Naglatha for apparently averting Girrigz's war with the surface world, even Girrigz himself seems somewhat mellowed, for there have been no more raids from above (mostly thanks to Kaz having had a few words with Muttonchops, the dockhand agitator). Naglatha receives gifts from the Vault folk worth another 250gp.
(29/10/4708 AR Rise of the Rune Lords "Burnt Offerings" - the town of Sandpoint on the Lost Coast is sacked and burned by a Goblin horde under Nualia.)
31/10/4708: On the last day of the month, with the Blood Veil Plague now officially eradicated everywhere outside quarantined Old Korvosa (and some signs it's beginning to subside there too); a ceremony is held at the Citadel to thank Kaz, Vemi, Naglatha and Durnhelm for their extensive efforts for the city - from Kaz's early alert about the tainted silver coins, through dealing with the fake potion-seller, apprehending Jolistina Susperio, and most importantly aiding the Hell Knights to cleanse the source of the corruption at the Temple of Urgathoa. All four are given full commissions in the Korvosan Guard, Durnhelm as a First Lieutenant and the others as junior Lieutenants. Croft pins rank epaulettes on their shoulders, and opens the Citadel Armoury to them.
Each PC can select equipment from the stores worth up to 2500gp - including early firearms & nearly everything from Ultimate Equipment, and +1 weapons & armour.

Naglatha will have made a point of escorting the kidnapped stable lad from Sable Company back to their headquarters once the authorities had been alerted to the existence of the Temple of Urgathoa. While there she'll mention that she aspires to join Sable Company some day.At the Great Tower a Sable Company quartermaster thanks Naglatha, takes back the stableboy, and asks Naglatha to wait. Shortly thereafter she is escorted into the presence of the noble Commandant, Marcus Thalissinus Endrin, who looks gravely worried. He quizzes Naglatha at length about exactly what happened at the Hospice, and eventually asks if there is evidence that the Queen was responsible for the plot against Korvosa.
Commandant Endrin: "If the Queen did this, she will pay for her crimes. No one is above the Law - and no one is above Justice." He sets his jaw grimly.
Did Commandant Endrin make any comment when Naglatha mentioned she hopes it might be possible for her to join Sable Company one day?The Sable Company has plenty of vacancies currently since the Gray Maidens conscripted most of their female cadets. Commandant Endrin tells Naglatha she is very welcome to join the next cadet intake on 1/11. Training to full Sable Company Marine is an intensive six month program at the Endrin Military Academy, which includes bonding with a young hippogriff. Of course many recruits wash out in training.

Session 6 RL5 11-13/10/4708 AR The Potion Huckster, & Jolastina Susperino.
11/10/4708: The day after the battle with Gigriz, Zellara the dead Fortune Teller appears to Vermi Diaquani in a dream as he lies sick and feverish. He performs a dream Harrow reading with Zellara's bloodstained deck, and awakes cured of incipient lycanthropy. Kaz Anders, Naglatha, and a Cleric of Gorum in the Korvosan Guard have a strangely similar dream...
12/10/4708: Ishani Dhatri asks Vermi, Kaz and their new ally Dunhelm, a half-Shoanti Cleric of Gorum, to investigate reports of a cure for the Blood Veil plague being sold by the perfumier Lavender, owned by Vendra Loaggi. The group capture Vendra and expose her as a fraud. Vendra's strongmen seem more interested in celebrity-worship of Vermi Diaquani than in defending their mistress, who will be charged with capital fraud.
13/10/4708: A distraught Varisian dancing girl called Deyanira Mirukova asks the PCs to find her missing musician brother Ruan, who was hired to perform at Carowyn Manor. Investigating the Manor they find hordes of zombies, the remains of the Carowyn's guests reanimated as undead, and after a running battle capture the insane elf Jolastina Susperio, who claims an association with the notorious Necromancer, Rolth. She says Rolth sent her to wipe out the Carowyn party, but he was then taken away by Lady Andaisin, high priestess of the plague goddess Urgathoa, in the company of two women in Gray Maiden armour.
The group also rescue Ausio Carowyn, apparently the only survivor of the massacre/renanimation. Jolastina claims Rolth was taken to Andaisin's lair beneath the Hospice of the Blessed Maiden, where the Royal Physician Dr Davaulus and the Queen's Physicians are leading the battle against the Blood Veil!

In which we meet the Great and the Not So Good…
The quiet of the morning saw the opportunity to spend some of our gold, for me to take Zellara’s remains to the Temple of Pharasma for burial, and for Kaz to make provision for the care of Lamm’s child victims. As the day wore on it became clear that it was nothing more than a lull: away from the eyes of the Watch scores were being settled. On our way to the Palace to return the brooch we were forced to intervene on behalf of an idiot lordling who had got in over his head with a group of thugs keen to redress the imbalance of wealth. With the thugs soon unconscious on the ground, he thanked us with scant courtesy before running for safety.
At the Palace, the brooch was identified as one stolen from the Queen and we were presented to her to return it and receive a reward. I left the talking to Vemi and Kaz – royalty and palaces were a long way beyond my experience. She complimented us and flattered us, then asked us to continue serving Korvosa and report to Field Marshal Cressida Kroft. I was overwhelmed enough to nod agreement and we ended up heading towards Citadel Volshyenek with a pair of guards as escort.
The chaos in the city was continuing apace and even the otyughs from the vaults seemed not to want to be left out. One burst through the cobbles on the street in front of us and we were hard pressed to defeat it, but in the end a mighty spear blow from Vemi was sufficient to dispatch it. The Hellknight who had been running to join the fight ended up with nothing to do but offer a gruff ‘well done’ before we both continued on our way.
We arrived at the Citadel around dusk and were taken to Field Marshal Kroft. The guard were stretched to the limit trying to keep order in the city, but rather than being asked to support them directly, we were asked to go after a group of deserters who had set up shop in a butchers called ‘All the World’s Meat’ and bring them in, dead or alive. (If they were dead, we’d get only half the money so it was a fair incentive to keep them alive) They were led by Verik Van Kaskerkin and listening to the Marshal talk about him, I couldn’t help but think she had a soft spot for the deserter.
Rather than take the offered bunks for the night, we decided to go in immediately. We had the vaguest of plans but even that didn’t survive contact with the enemy and breaking in to the shop devolved into a brute force attack. We were fortunate that the deserters were ill prepared. The first few were knocked unconscious and we hurried upstairs to get Van Kaskerkin before he could escape. In the end, while our strategy was lacking, our tactics weren’t as, seeing Van Kaskerkin favoured bow and spear, we blocked him into a corner where he could use neither to advantage. After that it was just a matter of time before he had no choice but to surrender.
As we disarmed him and returned him to the Citadel he made no secret of his opposition to the Queen claiming that his work at ‘All the World’s Meat’ was to feed the poor who were starving. We decided to continue supporting it while turning over its running to someone more reliable. Amongst his gear was an unusual silver dagger that radiated magic, inscribed with Vudran carving and marked with the symbol of powerful Arkona family. I couldn’t help but wonder exactly what it was and how Verik had come by it…

Session 1: 1-2/8/4708 AR - Fall of Lamm, Edge of Anarchy
1st of Arodus (M8), 4708 Absalom Reckoning
Three residents of Korvosa, Naglatha Kaz and Vemi, are brought together by Zellara the Fortune-Teller for mutual revenge upon the crime lord Gaedren Lamm. Emerging from his fishery lair after nightfall, having done the deed, they find that King Eodred II Arabasti is dead, his Queen, Ileosa, has taken the throne, and serious rioting and looting has broken out throughout the city. Apparently many people dislike their Chelish queen, and don't want her as their new monarch.
Kaz Anders approaches Castle Korvosa seeking his friend the artist Trinia Sabor, who had been painting Eodred's portrait, but is told to report to Marshall Cressida Kroft at the Citadel.
2nd of Arodus (M8), 4708 Absalom Reckoning
After resting overnight at Vemi's place near the western docks, Naglatha goes to sell the night's loot to her uncle Devargo Barvasi, while Vemi talks with his actor contacts and Kaz seeks Trinia Sabor in her apartment in the Shingles. Kaz finds Trinia nervous and afraid, worried she'll somehow be blamed for the King's death. Trinia identifies a jeweled brooch found in Lamm's lair as belonging to Queen Ileosa. There is a substantial reward offered for its return.

Strange Meetings
In which Alliances are made and an Enemy’s downfall is arranged…
It only occurs to me now that it should have worried me more than it did at the time exactly how the Harrow Card inscribed with my name and an address in Midland came to be delivered to my lodging in Old Korvosa. After all, in my line of work only a fool advertises where they live. But there it was: an invitation to a meeting in Lancet Street and an opportunity to indulge in some long overdue vengeance. I’ve heard it said that some people believe revenge is a dish best served cold… As far as I’m concerned, I don’t like to leave my debts outstanding.
I arrived at Lancet Street and found the house; an ordinary house in an ordinary street. There was nothing obviously unusual about it but something at the edge of my awareness was screaming that things were a long, long way from ordinary. It set my nerves on edge but I could still see nothing obviously untoward. Have I mentioned how much I hate getting screwed over by magic? Despite my misgivings I went in; the chance of finding Gaedrenn Lamm was too good to turn down and it occurred to me perhaps too late that whoever had sent that invitation might well have known that.
There were two others already there: at first glance a fop and a clerk. A second glance told things more clearly: fine clothes, no longer quite fashionable, concealed a powerful build that belied the initial impression of an idle fop while calluses on the hands told of long practice with weapons – someone to watch out for. The other was no less deceptive: I decided he seemed vaguely familiar, a wizard of some sort but nothing like the mad bastards the Acadamae produced. It was the eyes that really gave him away: for all his unassuming demeanour, he had a killer’s eyes. They introduced themselves as Vemior Diaquani and Kaz Anders. They too had received Harrow Cards and been invited here to gain revenge on Gaedrenn Lamm.
Then our host arrived, a Varisian fortune-teller named Zellara. The sense I had that something was off with the whole set up still hadn’t abated but still there was nothing I could pin it down to. I watched somewhat distracted as the fortune-teller laid out the cards and gave us the usual recital: warnings of plots and danger, the chance for wealth, admonitions to take care… Then she told us that Lamm had wronged her too and that she had found his current base. The vagaries of fortune-telling were forgotten as she told us he was at the Old Fishery on the West Dock. Knowing Lamm would abandon the place at the first hint of trouble, we determined to hit him that evening.
The raid went about as close to plan as we could have hoped. Kaz summoned a spirit to his aid – apparently that of his younger sister who had been killed by Lamm years earlier and all I could think was that I was glad the creepy dead kid was on our side. The child ghost proved an effective diversion as the rest of us broke in through the front taking out Lamm’s bully boys one after the other. The children Lamm had kidnapped to work for him escaped into the city. Lamm himself had vanished, but the dead kid – Maria – took an unholy glee in terrifying one of Lamm’s henchmen into telling us where he had fled.
Lamm, it transpired, had taken refuge in the basement dock of the old Fishery. His pet alligator was between him and us, but unfortunately for him we were more than capable of killing him at range. Vemi took on the alligator while the rest of us focused on Lamm. Between my arrows and a very pissed off dead kid, he didn’t last long. Dumping his corpse in the same river where he had disposed of so many of his victims seemed a truly poetic resolution to our revenge.
With Lamm gone we went through the loot he’d accumulated. A fine jewelled brooch stood out as it was marked with the royal seal, worth more than the rest of his loot put together, but so identifiable that fencing it in Korvosa would just be asking for trouble – the best we could hope for was a finder’s fee. A hat box swarming with flies proved to be the repository for a poorly preserved, severed head, and it was with a peculiar lack of surprise that I recognised it as Zellara. Tucked into the box and stained with blood were her Harrow cards.
Leaving the Fishery it seemed we had stepped into a riot. King Eodred was dead and the streets were filled with people shouting abuse at the Queen. As expected the Watch were out in force, but then we caught a glimpse of patrols of Hellknights as well, and decided discretion was far and away the best option. Vemi’s apartment was close by and as we were burdened by what we had taken from Lamm’s base we holed up there to wait for the riot to burn itself out.
The grey dawn saw the city subdued and the streets quiet. It was easy to slip through to Old Korvosa where I knew I could fence Lamm’s treasures with fewest questions, returning a few hours later with a purse of Gold Sails to divide between us.

A second generation immigrant to Korvosa, Vemior's grandparents and their children were among loyalist refugees fleeing the short-lived Biston uprising of 4658.
Drawing upon decades of experience, the Diaquani family
quickly established themselves in West Dock as fishermen of some skill and
reputation.
Following the death of 'The Old-Man' (Cruskis) Diaquani in
4665, Vemi's father, Renior Diaquani,
officially took over as head of the family. With the help of some well-placed
customers and business partners in Korvosan polite society, Renior swiftly
shifted the company's emphasis from actual fishing to the overseeing of
fishing-boats and fish processing facilities, elevating the Diaquani name to a
respectable status in the city.
After completing the early years of his privately tutored
education, a teen-age Vemior turned his back on his father's desires for him to
study the family business; instead, pursuing a career as an actor and orator.
With a little money earned, a few connections made, and very
much imagining himself as some bohemian nobleman, Vemior enlisted at Orsini's Academy to learn swordplay.
This double insult to his father caused several serious arguments about
politics and family loyalty for the Diaquanis. With both men being too proud,
and too stubborn to apologise, the conflict eventually resulted in Vemior's
estrangement from his father; neither of them speaking to each other for
several years, the only exchange of words being through an intermediary, Zarda, Vemior's younger sister.
Through Zarda, Vemior learns that his father has become
secretly addicted to the street-drug 'shiver', and that in rare lucid moments
curses him as the cause of his addiction. Angry, and ready for an argument,
Vemi goes to confront his father, only to discover him in the midst of a
near-fatal overdose that leaves the once-proud patriarch pathetic and wretched.
Wracked with shame, Vemior is driven to investigate
Korvosa's drug ridden underworld, swearing vengeance on the "despicable
lowlife scum responsible for the devastation of my family". Eventually,
through a combination of subtle politicking, bribery, and outright
intimidation, he uncovers the name of local crimelord Gaedren Lamm.
