Account by Judith/Naglatha
In which we meet the Great and the Not So Good…
The quiet of the morning saw the opportunity to spend some of our gold, for me to take Zellara’s remains to the Temple of Pharasma for burial, and for Kaz to make provision for the care of Lamm’s child victims. As the day wore on it became clear that it was nothing more than a lull: away from the eyes of the Watch scores were being settled. On our way to the Palace to return the brooch we were forced to intervene on behalf of an idiot lordling who had got in over his head with a group of thugs keen to redress the imbalance of wealth. With the thugs soon unconscious on the ground, he thanked us with scant courtesy before running for safety.

At the Palace, the brooch was identified as one stolen from the Queen and we were presented to her to return it and receive a reward. I left the talking to Vemi and Kaz – royalty and palaces were a long way beyond my experience. She complimented us and flattered us, then asked us to continue serving Korvosa and report to Field Marshal Cressida Kroft. I was overwhelmed enough to nod agreement and we ended up heading towards Citadel Volshyenek with a pair of guards as escort.

The chaos in the city was continuing apace and even the otyughs from the vaults seemed not to want to be left out. One burst through the cobbles on the street in front of us and we were hard pressed to defeat it, but in the end a mighty spear blow from Vemi was sufficient to dispatch it. The Hellknight who had been running to join the fight ended up with nothing to do but offer a gruff ‘well done’ before we both continued on our way.

We arrived at the Citadel around dusk and were taken to Field Marshal Kroft. The guard were stretched to the limit trying to keep order in the city, but rather than being asked to support them directly, we were asked to go after a group of deserters who had set up shop in a butchers called ‘All the World’s Meat’ and bring them in, dead or alive. (If they were dead, we’d get only half the money so it was a fair incentive to keep them alive) They were led by Verik Van Kaskerkin and listening to the Marshal talk about him, I couldn’t help but think she had a soft spot for the deserter.

Rather than take the offered bunks for the night, we decided to go in immediately. We had the vaguest of plans but even that didn’t survive contact with the enemy and breaking in to the shop devolved into a brute force attack. We were fortunate that the deserters were ill prepared. The first few were knocked unconscious and we hurried upstairs to get Van Kaskerkin before he could escape. In the end, while our strategy was lacking, our tactics weren’t as, seeing Van Kaskerkin favoured bow and spear, we blocked him into a corner where he could use neither to advantage. After that it was just a matter of time before he had no choice but to surrender.

As we disarmed him and returned him to the Citadel he made no secret of his opposition to the Queen claiming that his work at ‘All the World’s Meat’ was to feed the poor who were starving. We decided to continue supporting it while turning over its running to someone more reliable. Amongst his gear was an unusual silver dagger that radiated magic, inscribed with Vudran carving and marked with the symbol of powerful Arkona family. I couldn’t help but wonder exactly what it was and how Verik had come by it…
