Session 1: 1-2/8/4708 AR - Fall of Lamm, Edge of Anarchy

1st of Arodus (M8), 4708 Absalom Reckoning

Three residents of Korvosa, Naglatha Kaz and Vemi, are brought together by Zellara the Fortune-Teller for mutual revenge upon the crime lord Gaedren Lamm. Emerging from his fishery lair after nightfall, having done the deed, they find that King Eodred II Arabasti is dead, his Queen, Ileosa, has taken the throne, and serious rioting and looting has broken out throughout the city. Apparently many people dislike their Chelish queen, and don't want her as their new monarch.
Kaz Anders approaches Castle Korvosa seeking his friend the artist Trinia Sabor, who had been painting Eodred's portrait, but is told to report to Marshall Cressida Kroft at the Citadel.

2nd of Arodus (M8), 4708 Absalom Reckoning
After resting overnight at Vemi's place near the western docks, Naglatha goes to sell the night's loot to her uncle Devargo Barvasi, while Vemi talks with his actor contacts and Kaz seeks Trinia Sabor in her apartment in the Shingles. Kaz finds Trinia nervous and afraid, worried she'll somehow be blamed for the King's death. Trinia identifies a jeweled brooch found in Lamm's lair as belonging to Queen Ileosa. There is a substantial reward offered for its return.

Strange Meetings
In which Alliances are made and an Enemy’s downfall is arranged…

It only occurs to me now that it should have worried me more than it did at the time exactly how the Harrow Card inscribed with my name and an address in Midland came to be delivered to my lodging in Old Korvosa. After all, in my line of work only a fool advertises where they live. But there it was: an invitation to a meeting in Lancet Street and an opportunity to indulge in some long overdue vengeance. I’ve heard it said that some people believe revenge is a dish best served cold… As far as I’m concerned, I don’t like to leave my debts outstanding.

I arrived at Lancet Street and found the house; an ordinary house in an ordinary street. There was nothing obviously unusual about it but something at the edge of my awareness was screaming that things were a long, long way from ordinary. It set my nerves on edge but I could still see nothing obviously untoward. Have I mentioned how much I hate getting screwed over by magic? Despite my misgivings I went in; the chance of finding Gaedrenn Lamm was too good to turn down and it occurred to me perhaps too late that whoever had sent that invitation might well have known that.

There were two others already there: at first glance a fop and a clerk. A second glance told things more clearly: fine clothes, no longer quite fashionable, concealed a powerful build that belied the initial impression of an idle fop while calluses on the hands told of long practice with weapons – someone to watch out for. The other was no less deceptive: I decided he seemed vaguely familiar, a wizard of some sort but nothing like the mad bastards the Acadamae produced. It was the eyes that really gave him away: for all his unassuming demeanour, he had a killer’s eyes. They introduced themselves as Vemior Diaquani and Kaz Anders. They too had received Harrow Cards and been invited here to gain revenge on Gaedrenn Lamm.

Then our host arrived, a Varisian fortune-teller named Zellara. The sense I had that something was off with the whole set up still hadn’t abated but still there was nothing I could pin it down to. I watched somewhat distracted as the fortune-teller laid out the cards and gave us the usual recital: warnings of plots and danger, the chance for wealth, admonitions to take care… Then she told us that Lamm had wronged her too and that she had found his current base. The vagaries of fortune-telling were forgotten as she told us he was at the Old Fishery on the West Dock. Knowing Lamm would abandon the place at the first hint of trouble, we determined to hit him that evening.

The raid went about as close to plan as we could have hoped. Kaz summoned a spirit to his aid – apparently that of his younger sister who had been killed by Lamm years earlier and all I could think was that I was glad the creepy dead kid was on our side. The child ghost proved an effective diversion as the rest of us broke in through the front taking out Lamm’s bully boys one after the other. The children Lamm had kidnapped to work for him escaped into the city. Lamm himself had vanished, but the dead kid – Maria – took an unholy glee in terrifying one of Lamm’s henchmen into telling us where he had fled.

Lamm, it transpired, had taken refuge in the basement dock of the old Fishery. His pet alligator was between him and us, but unfortunately for him we were more than capable of killing him at range. Vemi took on the alligator while the rest of us focused on Lamm. Between my arrows and a very pissed off dead kid, he didn’t last long. Dumping his corpse in the same river where he had disposed of so many of his victims seemed a truly poetic resolution to our revenge.

With Lamm gone we went through the loot he’d accumulated. A fine jewelled brooch stood out as it was marked with the royal seal, worth more than the rest of his loot put together, but so identifiable that fencing it in Korvosa would just be asking for trouble – the best we could hope for was a finder’s fee. A hat box swarming with flies proved to be the repository for a poorly preserved, severed head, and it was with a peculiar lack of surprise that I recognised it as Zellara. Tucked into the box and stained with blood were her Harrow cards.

Leaving the Fishery it seemed we had stepped into a riot. King Eodred was dead and the streets were filled with people shouting abuse at the Queen. As expected the Watch were out in force, but then we caught a glimpse of patrols of Hellknights as well, and decided discretion was far and away the best option. Vemi’s apartment was close by and as we were burdened by what we had taken from Lamm’s base we holed up there to wait for the riot to burn itself out.

The grey dawn saw the city subdued and the streets quiet. It was easy to slip through to Old Korvosa where I knew I could fence Lamm’s treasures with fewest questions, returning a few hours later with a purse of Gold Sails to divide between us.

PC - Vemior "Vemi" Diaquani - Alex Bard

Vemior "Vemi" Diaquani (formerly of Diaquani Marine Interests).
Bard-2 AC 14 HP 18 ST 18 DE 13 CO 10 IN 14 WI 10 CH 14
spells: 1 - Grease, Cure Light Wounds, Charm Person, 0- Detect Magic, Read Magic, Prestidigitation, Dancing Lights, Ghost Sound.
Character Sheet
A second generation immigrant to Korvosa, Vemior's grandparents and their children were among loyalist refugees fleeing the short-lived Biston uprising of 4658.
Drawing upon decades of experience, the Diaquani family quickly established themselves in West Dock as fishermen of some skill and reputation.
Following the death of 'The Old-Man' (Cruskis) Diaquani in 4665, Vemi's father, Renior Diaquani, officially took over as head of the family. With the help of some well-placed customers and business partners in Korvosan polite society, Renior swiftly shifted the company's emphasis from actual fishing to the overseeing of fishing-boats and fish processing facilities, elevating the Diaquani name to a respectable status in the city.
After completing the early years of his privately tutored education, a teen-age Vemior turned his back on his father's desires for him to study the family business; instead, pursuing a career as an actor and orator.
With a little money earned, a few connections made, and very much imagining himself as some bohemian nobleman, Vemior enlisted at Orsini's Academy to learn swordplay. This double insult to his father caused several serious arguments about politics and family loyalty for the Diaquanis. With both men being too proud, and too stubborn to apologise, the conflict eventually resulted in Vemior's estrangement from his father; neither of them speaking to each other for several years, the only exchange of words being through an intermediary, Zarda, Vemior's younger sister.
Through Zarda, Vemior learns that his father has become secretly addicted to the street-drug 'shiver', and that in rare lucid moments curses him as the cause of his addiction. Angry, and ready for an argument, Vemi goes to confront his father, only to discover him in the midst of a near-fatal overdose that leaves the once-proud patriarch pathetic and wretched.

Wracked with shame, Vemior is driven to investigate Korvosa's drug ridden underworld, swearing vengeance on the "despicable lowlife scum responsible for the devastation of my family". Eventually, through a combination of subtle politicking, bribery, and outright intimidation, he uncovers the name of local crimelord Gaedren Lamm.

PC - Kaz Anders - Francis Summoner

Francis PC – Kaz Anders
There were two children, a brother and a sister, who were taken and made to join the Little Lamms - and, unusually they worked as a team. He'd play a slightly flamboyant distraction for her pickpocketing skills, bringing in far more income together than they would separately. Not a bad set of earners but ultimately they made mistakes and robbed the wrong people. Both were savagely beaten and thrown out on the rubbish dump to die. He survived. She did not.
When he realised she was dead he swore revenge on his life - but she heard the oath before her spirit departed the plane and managed to tap into both their latent magics to haunt and help him - and to settle her own score with Gaedren Lamm.
Class: Summoner, with the sister being the Eidolon. Background: Tortured.
Kaz Anders” (and if you think that’s his real name, he’s got some beachfront property to sell you) has multiple stories he will tell about what happened when he was little and if pressed himself will admit that it was a load of old cobblers.  That he (and his sister Marie) were actually the children of a couple of shoe repairers is just something that adds to his amusement and glee in storytelling.
Their father died when they were seven, and their mother died three months later of a broken heart.  With two already scrawny kids trying to fend for themselves it was entirely predictable that they were picked up less than a month later to join the Little Lamms.  And remained together as one of the more effective teams in the Little Lamms; he’d cause a distraction and while everyone was stopped, gawping she’d pick their pockets.  Or, more rarely, vise-versa.  But his biggest con was to convince everyone (with her assistance) that his sister Marie was, in fact, his identical twin brother Mark as both of them had seen the likely fate of street girls (and of the two “Kaz” was the prettier).  It took an elaborate shell game with his flair and her attention to detail (and, to be honest, sheer terror on both their parts) to work the whole con on people they lived with - especially when a number of distractions called for a pretty girl (which could have been either of them).  Kaz will sometimes talk, seemingly freely, about this part of his life.  The stories he tells are all either carefully selected or sanitised - or (and as often as not) complete fabrications.  And most of the people he knew back then are dead or in prison.
But all good things must come to an end - and the shell game ran into puberty.  One’s figure started to change, the other’s voice started to break.  Oops.  Cutting a long and unpleasant story short, they ended up both caught out and punished for the ongoing deception that had on two occasions fooled.  A very unpleasant few hours followed, ending with both of them being thrown out onto the rubbish dump and left for dead.
Trinia Sabor’s painting “The price of wealth” contains a pretty young boy and girl, fingers interlaced and gazes locked, and with scarlet blood running out of them into a dull green mountain of garbage as the sun sets red behind them.  It was her second painting thought to be great, but is seldom shown because people find it distressing. The companion piece, the much more impressionistic and much better received (although few see the biting satire because the paintings are seldom side by side and few look at the detail of the “bed” or see the departure of the girl’s soul and the greying of her eyes) “Greater Love” which has the same boy and girl on silk sheets and a gold-lit room, the girl’s eyes shining as the boy is surrounded by a healing fire.  Those were both drawn and painted in retrospect while he was bandaged up and in her chambers, recovering after she pulled him out of the rubbish dump.  He’s also her muse in a number of other paintings and background in still others - something that worries him especially as he’s a conman and trickster at times and doesn't want anything bad happening to the person who saved his life.
That was three years ago, and he made two vows.  Revenge on Garderen Lamm, ensuring that no one would take his place, and that he’d try to bring his sister back as she didn’t cross over, instead pouring power into him, and joining him as his Eidolon (and he also has a few locks of her hair - enough for Resurrection - but still a major quest issue).
For most of the time when he hasn’t been serving as muse to Trinia or one of her friends, he’s been keeping body and soul together through being one of the stringers at Pilts Swastel’s Exemplary Excrables playhouse.  Never a lead, never much money.  But enough to keep body and soul together; his lodgings are in an actor’s garrett about 6’ long and 4’ wide just under a roof.  Not that he needs any more (or even spends much of his time there).
Six months ago he finally managed what he considers a major success towards bringing down Garderen Lamm.  Tarma Keth, one of Garaden’s more capable lieutenants, and the person that actually slit Marie’s throat, had been casting eyes towards Eel’s End and expanding in that direction.

He spoke to (separately) Devargo Barvasi and Watch Sergeant Grau Soldado. The conversation was almost the same in both cases “If you deploy some men there tonight, Tarma will be in the arms of the watch having made a full confession by dawn.  My only price is that you see the Little Lamms are looked after well.”  He delivered, with Tarma claiming that she was being haunted by the ghost of a girl he’d once killed.  All above board and he delivered on his promises for a very low price.  But delivering a large success obviously as the result of an effective con, and not claiming much reward doesn’t tend to make you particularly well liked, however charming you are (and the more charming the less trusted in some ways).  Still, it’s enough to get an audience when and if he needs it.

PC - Naglatha Winterkill - Judith Ranger

Niece of Devargo Barvassi.
She's a second generation half-orc, born when a Korvosan half-orc thug raped a girl called Alyna Barvassi.  Alyna's older brother, Devargo hunted down and killed the half-orc.  Alyna died in childbirth and rather than be encumbered with raising an unwanted child between building his growing criminal network, Devargo gave the child into the care of one of the morlock groups who lived in the Vaults beneath Korvosa.  The child, still unnamed, grew up as one of the feral urchins that lived in the Vaults.  It was a (possibly insane) Varisian mystic who first started calling her Naglatha and the name stuck.  (All she knows is it's something to do with an obscure Thassilonian story).

As she grew up, "Uncle" Devargo made sure she knew how to fight and survive.  She had always hated the senseless, wanton brutality that she had grew up surrounded by - her few friends, the other urchins, were not as tough as she was and too often she'd seen them hurt or even killed for scant reason.  She did occasionally do work for Devargo - typically protecting Devargo's people from other thugs - but also started taking on contract work for the City Guard.  Not too long afterwards she encountered Gaedren Lamm.  Knowing her connection to Devargo (a sometime rival who had embarrassed him one time too many), Lamm decided to get some of his own back by kidnapping her and ODing her on Shiver. She should had died, but somehow managed to pull through even though it took some weeks to fully recover.

Second generation half-orc.  5'11'' tall, sinewy build. Heavy-set features, long coarse, stringy black hair, yellow-amber eyes, greyish-tinged skin.

Home
Naglatha's home base is a large, low-ceilinged dockside warehouse garret in the Shingles above the Old Dock district of Old Korvosa. While it's not exactly salubrious, it has the benefit of being rent-free as the warehouse is owned by her uncle, Devargo Barvasi.

Among the rogues and thugs of the Bridgefront/Old Dock area Naglatha is often recognised and is usually offered wary respect as she's been known to act as one of Devargo's enforcers. Amongst many of the poorest but often more honest slum dwellers, she holds a better reputation as a hunter of the chokers that infest the overcrowded waterfront slums.

Additional
Naglatha's friend at the Temple of Pharasma is called Aelius Varodin (of Chelaxian descent).  Growing up they were part of the same gang of feral kids.  Aelius was kidnapped by Lamm and forced to work as one of his pickpockets - it was the first time that Lamm had appeared on Naglatha's radar.  Aelius wasn't sneaky enough to be a very good pickpocket and earned frequent beatings.  Eventually after getting carried away, they left him for dead.  Hours later when he regained consciousness, he staggered away and collapsed on the steps of the Temple of Pharasma.  Since he wore the symbol of Pharasma, he was taken in and as he recovered started training as an acolyte of the temple.  It was only months later that Naglatha discovered her friend had survived - she took this as a sign of Pharasma's presence in the city and adopted her as her patron goddess.

It was two years ago in the depths of winter that Naglatha earned the Shoanti honorific "Winterkill".  A small group of Sklar-Quah Shoanti lead by Khurdak Calls-the-Thunder came to Korvosa to take revenge on a Korvosan gang who robbed and murdered a Shoanti trader.  Needing a local guide and tracker, they were recommended to hire Naglatha.  Driven by the need to seek revenge for their murdered kin, they were able to overcome the antipathy that all Shoanti had towards orcs and work with her.  They caught up with the gang on the Shingles of Old Korvosa and the ensuing melee fought in a rare driving blizzard ended with the gang being slaughtered, several of the Shoanti wounded and Naglatha dying.  The Shoanti shaman was able to revive her and they spent the next few days recovering at the garret where Naglatha lived before the Shoanti returned to the Cinderlands.

Guide to Korvosa

A panoramic view of Korvosa

Korvosa Wiki

Korvosa ca 4710 AR
The half-orc King Tsadok I Arabasti, grandson of Queen Domina by her renegade daughter the Princess Tisada (a lost sister to King Eodred), has ruled since M2 4709 AR, following the death of Queen Ileosa in M1 4709. He has four children (2m 2f) by four different consorts, all four conceived M1-2 4709, prior to his Coronation. It seems that the Curse of the Crimson Throne has for once been evaded, at least.
Sable Company has been reformed under Commandant Naglatha Winterkill (Barvassi), also a half-orc. A Popular Council voted by all citizens (M5 4709, next election M5 4713) provides democratic input, under the elected leadership of Chief Councillor Kaz Anders. The noble Glorio Arkona contributed much wealth to the rebuilding of Korvosa after the depredations of Ileosa; House Arkona is widely regarded as preeminent even over the Jeggare, while the House Ornelos association with Ileosa has caused them a loss of prestige.

Korvosa Population
The Census of Domina in 4682 AR put the number of tax-paying Korvosan adult citizenry at 18,486. It is widely believed that the actual population of the city is far higher. With more than a square mile of dense habitation within the walls one might expect a population in the range of 50-100,000, and the size of Korvosa's military, clergy, tax revenues and other elements appear to support such an estimate.
Korvosa rules a wide but still sparsely settled rural hinterland of farms and ranches as far as Biston and Sirathu, almost 40,000 square miles, with a total subject population estimated at around half a million.

Korvosan Military
Korvosa has a strong standing army comprising the 700 Korvosan Guard under Field Marshall Cressida Croft and up to 200 Sable Company Marines under Commandant Marcus Thalassinus Endrin Naglatha Winterkill (Barvassi) (4709-). The Guard protect the streets, walls, and public buildings of the city, serving as law enforcement. The Sable Company patrol the sky over and around Korvosa, with particular responsibility for the seas - ships approaching Korvosa are subject to inspection before they ever reach the docks. The city does not maintain a standing navy.
In time of war the monarch of Korvosa can raise a levy of up to about five thousand men from outlying territories as far as Biston and Sirathu, including sturdy colonial Chelish infantry yeomen, numbers of heavy cavalry (knights) including the Order of the Nail Hellknights, light cavalry ranchers, and Varisian auxiliary archers and slingers.  If threatened with invasion, given enough time the city herself can double the Guard and muster a defensive militia with a nominal roll of 2,700, though Marshall Croft puts the actual tally of reliables at no more than two thirds of that figure.
A typical Korvosan field army would comprise: 100 Sable Company marines, 500 Korvosan Guard, 100 Order of the Nail Hellknights, 2900 rural levy from the ranches, farms, and Varisian auxiliary (comprising 200 knights, 600 light cavalry, 900 archers, 1200 infantry), for a total strength of 3600.
