PC - Naglatha Winterkill - Judith Ranger

Niece of Devargo Barvassi.
She's a second generation half-orc, born when a Korvosan half-orc thug raped a girl called Alyna Barvassi.  Alyna's older brother, Devargo hunted down and killed the half-orc.  Alyna died in childbirth and rather than be encumbered with raising an unwanted child between building his growing criminal network, Devargo gave the child into the care of one of the morlock groups who lived in the Vaults beneath Korvosa.  The child, still unnamed, grew up as one of the feral urchins that lived in the Vaults.  It was a (possibly insane) Varisian mystic who first started calling her Naglatha and the name stuck.  (All she knows is it's something to do with an obscure Thassilonian story).

As she grew up, "Uncle" Devargo made sure she knew how to fight and survive.  She had always hated the senseless, wanton brutality that she had grew up surrounded by - her few friends, the other urchins, were not as tough as she was and too often she'd seen them hurt or even killed for scant reason.  She did occasionally do work for Devargo - typically protecting Devargo's people from other thugs - but also started taking on contract work for the City Guard.  Not too long afterwards she encountered Gaedren Lamm.  Knowing her connection to Devargo (a sometime rival who had embarrassed him one time too many), Lamm decided to get some of his own back by kidnapping her and ODing her on Shiver. She should had died, but somehow managed to pull through even though it took some weeks to fully recover.

Second generation half-orc.  5'11'' tall, sinewy build. Heavy-set features, long coarse, stringy black hair, yellow-amber eyes, greyish-tinged skin.

Home
Naglatha's home base is a large, low-ceilinged dockside warehouse garret in the Shingles above the Old Dock district of Old Korvosa. While it's not exactly salubrious, it has the benefit of being rent-free as the warehouse is owned by her uncle, Devargo Barvasi.

Among the rogues and thugs of the Bridgefront/Old Dock area Naglatha is often recognised and is usually offered wary respect as she's been known to act as one of Devargo's enforcers. Amongst many of the poorest but often more honest slum dwellers, she holds a better reputation as a hunter of the chokers that infest the overcrowded waterfront slums.

Additional
Naglatha's friend at the Temple of Pharasma is called Aelius Varodin (of Chelaxian descent).  Growing up they were part of the same gang of feral kids.  Aelius was kidnapped by Lamm and forced to work as one of his pickpockets - it was the first time that Lamm had appeared on Naglatha's radar.  Aelius wasn't sneaky enough to be a very good pickpocket and earned frequent beatings.  Eventually after getting carried away, they left him for dead.  Hours later when he regained consciousness, he staggered away and collapsed on the steps of the Temple of Pharasma.  Since he wore the symbol of Pharasma, he was taken in and as he recovered started training as an acolyte of the temple.  It was only months later that Naglatha discovered her friend had survived - she took this as a sign of Pharasma's presence in the city and adopted her as her patron goddess.

It was two years ago in the depths of winter that Naglatha earned the Shoanti honorific "Winterkill".  A small group of Sklar-Quah Shoanti lead by Khurdak Calls-the-Thunder came to Korvosa to take revenge on a Korvosan gang who robbed and murdered a Shoanti trader.  Needing a local guide and tracker, they were recommended to hire Naglatha.  Driven by the need to seek revenge for their murdered kin, they were able to overcome the antipathy that all Shoanti had towards orcs and work with her.  They caught up with the gang on the Shingles of Old Korvosa and the ensuing melee fought in a rare driving blizzard ended with the gang being slaughtered, several of the Shoanti wounded and Naglatha dying.  The Shoanti shaman was able to revive her and they spent the next few days recovering at the garret where Naglatha lived before the Shoanti returned to the Cinderlands.
