Smon: GM: You are in a hall with 3 surviving pillars, about 25' e-w by 30' n-s, the n-e corner collapsed along with most of the e tunnel you came in by. The walls floor and even ceiling are covered with writing in ancient Thassilonian, spiralling & trailing, script from 3' high to tiny, some dark ink, some blood, some even carved in the stone. A narrow tunnel to the n is filled with white-glowing fog, to the south are massive stone double doors each carved with 3-eyed jackal head - Lamashtu, the Mother of Monsters! To the west a narrower 15' n-s by 20' e-w pillared tunnel opens out into what looks like a massive cathedral, where green light flickers.
Smon: OOC I have no pdf so will take me a while to type out descriptions
JamesDevil: "hmm, can anyone tell if that mist is magical? i'd rather not get melted or something nasty like that"
Smon: GM: Shieldbiter & Sandor have faded back to their own world for now, apparently this is temporary and will be happening a lot.

Keelia: Quillax shrugs off the disappearance of their companions. The gods are fickle and send and snatch away people often

Smon: As you look around, standing over the dead hounds, you suddenly hear a harsh but sibilant voice in your heads!

"Who are you? What brings you to my domain?"

Smon: The fog is clearly magical, like the webs Claw burned through on the stairs.
Keelia: Quillax tilts her head.
Smon: Claw you can roll Perception.
JamesDevil rolls 1d20+7 and gets: 7, (+7) = 14
joriandrake: "We are merely wanderers passing through, and who, pray tell, might you be?"
Smon: No sign of any source.
Keelia: Quillax, seeing Claw peering into the shadows, will do likewise
Keelia: She'll strain her ears for movement, especially of the scaled kind
joriandrake: (Drakhaien just hopes he spots anything interesting with his natural keen senses)
Smon: "They call me the Scribbler, but once I was Xaliasa. You are more than wanderers, though. I wish to learn from you what has transpired in the time I have been gone."
Smon: There does not seem to be any movement, and the voice is entirely in your head, no visible source.
Keelia: "From where have you returned?"
joriandrake: (Do we know anything of Scribbler/Xalasia?)

Keelia: "And when? We cannot tell you what has passed if we do not know how long you were gone."

joriandrake: (eh, even if I roll a 20 it will only be 29 but I'll try to see result  )

Smon: "From Thassilon, of course! The Goddess has restored me here, to guard her sacred shrine... but I sense I have been gone a long time."
Keelia: "I would see those with whom I speak"
joriandrake: "... considering where we 'met', are you a spirit? Undead? Alive? We wouldn't mind a chat, but having a conversation with someone in our minds while we stand in middle of beasts that attacked us feels awkward. Might we meet face to face?"
Smon: Partial success for Qullax - the name rings a bell? According to the Therassic Library, a certain Xaliasa was high in the service of Runelord Alaznist, last Runelord of Wrath, commanding a Hellstorm Flume, one of several defensive fortifications between her realm and that of Runelord Karzoug. This was over 10,000 years ago of course.
Smon: There were also references to Xaliasa breeding Sinspawn for Alaznist's armies.
JamesDevil: "does this look familiar"?" Claw holds up the shard of greed
Smon: "I live... I am now Divine Guardian of this place, this Temple of the Goddess."
Smon: "Perhaps if you satisfy my queries, I may meet with you... later." A long pause. "You hold the Shard of Greed. You serve Karzoug?"
JamesDevil: "no, we plan to spot his machinations"
joriandrake: "No"
JamesDevil: stop*
joriandrake: "foil them even"
Smon: "So, Karzoug still lives! That is not good. Yes, he must be stopped! But what of Alaznist?"

Smon: "To defeat Karzoug, you will need the secrets of the Runeforge - secrets only I know!"
Keelia: Quillax straightens, "And what do you require in exchange for this knowledge?"
Keelia: "I assume there is a price."
JamesDevil: "perhaps we can clear your temples of these hounds?"
JamesDevil: Claw kicks one of the corpses
Smon: "You must answer my questions! What happened to Thassilon? What nation replaced it? Who rules there now? Where is the seat of their power?"
Keelia: (sorry, odd question, does Scribbler sound male or female?)
Smon: male
JamesDevil: "much has changed"
Keelia: Thassilon is no more. It's lands are spread amongst a series of smaller kingdoms
JamesDevil: Claw sketches a quick map of the are the area that he knows of on the floor
JamesDevil: "this is what is left of Thassilon"
joriandrake: "Fascinating, are you capable to forge a new rune?" Drakhaien asks once the voice mentiones the secrets of runeforge, then replies to the question "As far I remember, Thassion fell during the Earthfall and the former territory is now owned by multiple, very different realms. The blood of Thassilon survived through as the descendants of the new nations"
Smon: GM: Claw sketches a crude map of Varisia with the cities of Magnimar, Korvosa & Riddleport.

Smon: "Earthfall? Yes, that was what slew me, must have been... but through the grace of the goddess, I live again!"

Smon: "Who wields powerful magic today? Are there any to compare with the Runelords? Are the Runelords all gone? Except Karzoug - you say he seeks to return?"
Smon: "Lamashtu, yes, the Great Mother!"
Keelia: Quillax quietly face-palms.
Smon: The Scribbler seems worried about Karzoug's possible return.
Keelia: "I have adventured with many who wield powerful magics. But not as the Runelords did. Yes, they are all gone. He seeks to return but we have turned him back once and seek to do so again. As we have answered your questions, perhaps you can share information as well? We seek to stop Karzoug and you say you know the secret."
joriandrake: "There are many ways of magical paths of learning and natural talents, not ever spellcaster shows their true potential publicly, maybe some of the powers would be fully new to you. I assume you could enjoy a couple history and arcane books. Are you able to leave the temple?"

Smon: To Drakhaien: "At this time, the Goddess requires me to guard Her temple. I do not leave."
joriandrake: (Drakhaien tries to chat in a way to gather intel while raising his interest)
Keelia: "We would stand as Guardians to this world, much like you stand as Guardian to this temple. It would be a great help if we knew how best to turn him back."
joriandrake: "Hm, I can then in return of your aid offer that we bring you books on topics you are interested in, many authors and sages were born and have died while you were gone, their work is fully unknown to you I believe."
Smon: To Quillax: "Aye... You require the Runeforge. A place of learning, created by the Runelords but grown beyond their control. The one place in all Thassilon where they could not enter, or influence. The secrets to defeating them would be hidden still within Runeforge's walls. I planned to go there, but... the goddess had other plans."
JamesDevil: "tell me, does a shard well in these ruins somewhere?"
JamesDevil: dwell*
Keelia: "Do you know where the Runeforge is? That we might travel to it?
Keelia: "And it wouldn't happen to be a giant library, would it?"
Smon: "I do not know the location of the Sihedron shards - doubtless Runeforge would hold such knowledge." OOC You already know a Shard lies in the fortress of Guiltspur far to the north east, in the shadow of the Kodar mountains - 6 years ago Sheila Heidmarch decided against seeking it.
JamesDevil: oos I'm up fro raiding a fortress:)
Keelia: (we may need to if we have to put the shards together to stop him  )
joriandrake: (does the party know of this way to call the shards? 'Sihedron'?)

Smon: "I have a test for you - I have hidden the map to Runeforge, and the key to its door, in the writings on the walls of this shrine. See if you can decipher it, and prove yourself Worthy of the Goddess!"
JamesDevil: "oh great....reading...."
joriandrake: "All right"
Keelia: Quillax pats Claw on the back.
joriandrake: Drakhaien will first try to decipher without magic, then if getting bored/annoyed enough if failing he'll cast Comprehend Languages

Smon: The Ancient Thassilonian script only barely resembles the letters of modern Varisian, and the words are indecipherable to one not conversant in that dead language.
joriandrake: OK, so Comprehend Languages it is
joriandrake: Drakhaien speaks a few words, snaps his fingers on the left then with glowing eyes starts to read the writing
Smon: Quillax can make out the words (with some effort) - as can Drak with Comp Languages - there are many prayers and invocations to Lamashtu, dread demon goddess, Mother of Monsters. Among them an odd stanza - "If Magic Bright is Your Desire, To Old Runeforge Must You Retire! For only there does Wizards' Art Receive its due and proper Start."
JamesDevil: "what the hell does that mean?"
Keelia: "Old Runeforge? As opposed to new or current."
joriandrake: "Magic Bright I assume is the seven pointed star of which the shards are pieces of, to get - or make - it I assume we have to go to the Runeforge"
Smon: "When you have deciphered the secret, meet me deep in the Temple, and we shall discuss further... if you survive!"
joriandrake: "old Runeforge seems strange ineed, considering that when this was written the Runeforge should still have been new"
Keelia: "But it says old runeforge. So maybe there is more than one?"
Smon: You get the impression the Scribbler has departed.
JamesDevil: "there must be another"
joriandrake: Drakhaien ignored the Scribbler already, it can watch over them anyway, and most likely does so quetly
joriandrake: quietly
Keelia: "Maybe the runes were forged elsewhere to start? And only when they all pooled their power together did it grow out of control?"
JamesDevil: "we must have missed a path somewhere"
Keelia: "Claw, do you still have that torch? Bring it close to this wall."
joriandrake: "What I don't understand is: For only there does Wizards' Art Receive its due and proper Start."
JamesDevil: "sure, claw moves to the wall"

Keelia: Quillax will look to see if there are any letters revealed by the bright light
JamesDevil: "I still think we should backtrack maybe to the secret door we came through, the one i smash, i think there was a corridor there"
Smon: GM: You notice that the west corridor leading into the rusty-lit cathedral has a small door in the north wall.
JamesDevil: Claw will approach it
JamesDevil: then put his door to it and see if he hears anything
Smon: There's also the north tunnel w glowing fog and the double doors to south.
JamesDevil: ear*
JamesDevil: which way did we enter from?
Smon: You came in from east. I suggest mapping otherwise you will all get v confused! GM: Claw moves west to the tunnel, there are 4 fluted pillars supporting the ceiling, and listens at the north door - silence. He has a good view into the cathedral which opens up just 5' to the west.
Keelia: Do we need magic to reveal more? Quillax will use a produce flame on her hand and hold it up to the wall
JamesDevil: "hmm"
JamesDevil: Claw will backtrack to the fog and try to burn it with his torch
Smon: The cathedral is vast, despite mounds of rubble and crumbling walls, about running about 50' west to a raised stone pulpit, its statues now largely buried under mounds of rock. 4 40' high black stone pillars in the centre of the cathedral surround a 20'-wide rust-glowing image of a 3 eyed jackal head. In alcoves to n & s (three each side) are statues of Lamashtu, jackal headed pregnant woman with kukris crossed over her chest, taloned feet, reptilian tail.
joriandrake: Drakhaien inspects the location to find anything hidden, traps, writing, lever etc

Smon: The cathedral has a rubble strewn exit at w end of s wall. The walls are covered in more of the writing. GM: Which location Drak - the entry hall where the Scribbler spoke to you?
joriandrake: Where we were before you posted the cathedral part yes
joriandrake: I don't want us to miss anything there
Smon: GM: The fog in the north tunnel does not burn at Claw's torch. Drak searches around and satisfies himself there are no hidden traps or levers here, and all the writing is visible.
joriandrake: Investigation could also help to make sense of the writing

Keelia: OK, I have a rough map sketched out. Not sure it's anyway near correct tho
Keelia: Quillax will go west into the tunnel and investigate the north door in that tunnel. I think claw already listened there?
Smon: Investigation - the writing about Runeforge looks to be first stanza of a larger work. Insight - whoever created this writing seems not entirely sane.
joriandrake: "An author of my tastes, I love it I love it!"
Keelia: Quillax waves Claw over. "I'm going to open this door."
joriandrake: "There will be more parts of this elsewhere, it is the first stanza only" he tells the others as he catches up

Smon: Yes. Quillax goes to the tunnel & the north door - the frame is slightly skewed, likely by movement in the earth - Earthfall maybe? Suddenly movement in the cathedral to the west catches her attention; a huge figure is forming over the central floor image of Lamashtu.
joriandrake: (readied bow)
Keelia: "Makes sense. This tells us nothing about a location."
Keelia: "Um."
joriandrake: (hide - bonus action)
Keelia: She points at the figure
Keelia: "Claw?"
JamesDevil: Claw draws his axe
joriandrake: Drak peeks out from somewhere to check out the figure and what the others do
Keelia: (sorry, one second, trying to find my spell list!)

They raise their massive pincers. The second one speaks in your minds. "YOU BORE ME. COME. DIE NOW!" ooc not the same voice as the Scribbler.

Smon: You see a 5' alcove, door at far end, looks like it opens towards you.

JamesDevil: right, so Claw tries the handle on the alcover door
Smon: Claw pulls the door open, revealing a 15' across circular chamber. A low stone rim surrounds a 5' wide shallow pool in the centre that glows with soft gold radiance. The walls are carved with large runes (looks like formal dedications in Thassilonian) and the ceiling rises to a dome above.
Smon: OOC I'm going to say that with the time spent investigating, Drak can now read Thassilonian same as Quillax, ok?

Smon: Q & D can make out the basic sense of the runes; this is a holy site dedicated to Lamashtu, her "birthing pool" where those carrying the Spawn of Lamashtu would birth their 'holy' offspring.

Smon: It is the Giver of Life - from Quillax's perspective, monstrous foul & deformed life, of course.

Smon: The shallow glowing pool is only about 2' deep, Drak can see the softly curved bottom through the clear water.

Smon: Looks like you will have to go back to the antechamber and either take the double doors south or go west to the cathedral

Keelia: If stanza 1 was in the antechamber and 3 was in the cathedral, then 2 should be before that and 4 should be west of the cathedral?
Keelia: Otherwise, I'm going to have to get my stone shape spell on and start moving rubble

Smon: GM: OK. In the antechamber Claw throws open the south double doors, revealing a 10' wide tunnel running south 25-30' to where it is collapsed. There are no obvious doors off, but Drak can spot several, hidden by minor illusions - one in west wall 15' down, 2 in east wall 15' & 30' down.
Smon: Q senses that this corridor was recently full of magic fog
joriandrake: The elf informs the others and points the illusions out
joriandrake: "Let us check the hidden rooms one by one" he says, then stealths

Keelia: "Probably, but why waste the magic if they just open like the last?"
joriandrake: Drak just casts Mage Hand and tries to open the closest hidden door from distance

Smon: (yeah I'm ok) OK Drak approaches the door until he can make out the handle through the illusion. About 10' away from it he casts mage hand and turns the handle.
JamesDevil: Claw move up next to him just incase
Smon: The door opens into a 5' alcove, the back of it collapsed - may once have been a a tunnel.

Smon: (it's collapsed) The east door also opens away from you into a 5' wide, 10' long tunnel that opens into an oblong chamber with curving walls about 15' n-s by 20' e-w. There is dust and rubble on the floor, clearly disturbed recently. Lots of scribbles & markings on the chamber walls, and image of 3 eyed jackal head glaring at you from east wall.

Smon: Claw knows that in the Shoanti tongue, 'Mirror' is a common phrase for 'Lake', and that 'Steaming Mirror' is a term for Lake Stormunder due to its plentiful hot springs. Drak & Quillax recall that a mysterious circle of 7 stone heads stands upon the western slope of Mt Rimeskull on Stormunder's eastern shore.

Smon: OK it looks to Drak that this is the Second Stanza, fitting between the two you have already discovered.

Keelia: "There's never just 3 stanzas in anything, especially written by a crazy person. There will be a fourth and up to a 7th somewhere.

Smon: The south side of the cell has collapsed in a pile of rubble, looks dangerous.
Smon: No, the cells are unlit.
joriandrake: Sorry, I understood it as it emits light , so the other meaning of it, radial is the correct one
Smon: GM: You see no further ways on - looks like the only way on (unless Q turns to earth elemental form) is via the rift-tunnel in the cathedral's south wall.
Smon: yes
Keelia: Quillax steps back. "We should check the southern exit from the cathedral before we start messing with unstable areas"
joriandrake: Drakhaien sees no reason to step into the near-collapsed room
Smon: OOC I leave out most of Paizo's flowery language, guess I should have left out radiate too!
