8:23am  2019-2-09 joriandrake Has entered the room
joriandrake: Good Morning Simon
Smon: Morning J
joriandrake: what a shitty week for me, I look forward to some simple gaming
joriandrake: btw yesterday Chris and Don died in TPK for first time in my life as GM during a game
joriandrake: they were level 3, decided to attack an umber hulk that was otherwise occupied with eating
8:27am  2019-2-09 DESTROYERBILL Has entered the room
joriandrake: hi Bill
DESTROYERBILL: hi jorian
8:28am  2019-2-09 Sandor Sunneson Has entered the room
DESTROYERBILL: hi fergus
joriandrake: hi
Sandor Sunneson: Morning Bill, Jorian and Simon
Smon: Hi Fergus!
Smon: >>btw yesterday Chris and Don died in TPK for first time in my life as GM during a game
joriandrake: they were level 3, decided to attack an umber hulk that was otherwise occupied with eating << How did they take it?

Smon: I've killed tons of Chris's characters over the years, he tends to play pretty recklessly. Barbarians are the only class may survive that!
joriandrake: They took it far better than I dod o.O
joriandrake: they almost won actually, the UH had 14 hp left
8:30am  2019-2-09 JamesDevil Has entered the room
JamesDevil: morning all
JamesDevil: Keelia lost track of time and will be an hour late
Smon: Hi James!
joriandrake: the main issue was that Don played a Druid, they started with higher ground advantage, but the druid decided to turn into a giant badger and jump on the umber hulk, missed the attack plus lost height advantage as it landed beside the creature
DESTROYERBILL: hi james
joriandrake: hi James
Smon: OK I'll start with Quillax scouting ahead in bird form.
Sandor Sunneson: Sandor reappears
JamesDevil: who's Don and why was he a giant a badger?
Smon: 12-19/4 Quillax transports group & Brodert Quink to Jorgenfist and the Therassic Library, spends a week on research & recovering spell slots.

Last session research notes http://smonscurseofthecrimsonthrone.blogspot.com/2019/02/notes-from-therassic-library-karzoug.html

joriandrake: (you missed first part of story James, as GM I had the first TPK in my life, Don and Chris played and died attacking an umber hulk with lvl3 characters)
joriandrake: (Ghengisdon)
JamesDevil: ah, k
Smon: 20/4 at Jorgenfist, the Shoanti-style canoe boat to take you downriver to the Storrval lake and then on to Guiltspur is completed and ready to go.
JamesDevil: I've never actually been in a TPK that as far as i can remember
Smon: With a blue shimmer Shieldbiter & Sandor appear on the banks of a mountain river, just in time for the trip.
JamesDevil: I've been killed but tis not been a tpk
joriandrake: Drakhaien greets them
JamesDevil: Claw nods
joriandrake: GM: we are fully rested atm?
Sandor Sunneson: Sandor smiles, looking forward to what lies ahead
Smon: Yes you have had 2 weeks enough for 2 long rests
joriandrake: thx
Smon: Actually been 15 days total
Smon:https://sites.google.com/site/runelordsriseap/_/rsrc/1438372077178/varisia/varisia.pngHandy Varisia map
Smon: Are you all oaring the canoe down from Jorgenfist?
JamesDevil: yep
Sandor Sunneson: yeah
JamesDevil: along the shore to avoid the nasty beast, whereever it is
DESTROYERBILL: yeah
joriandrake: Drakhaien doesn't oar, he watches the surroundings with readied bow
JamesDevil: "lazy shite"
joriandrake: (Keeping watch is what I am best at)
Smon: It's a bright early spring morning, the mountain wind whipping at your furs and cloaks, as Quillax's druids, servants, pet bear, mechanised librarians etc wave you off.
JamesDevil: Claw says as he rows alone
Smon: OK with Claw Sandor & SB oarring you should be ok.
Smon: Jorgenfist - you are down at the river - https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiI595jkZfoNcsJfnV-V7qFXFFiR2-jhR6JlCKNo9N93kG315H-oBKqyFB6fB_Cj3INe3tbmCD6Dbb4C0l-mHF-75ua6uunn4j9LX0M2FXmpbc4IR0-fi4-dJY-z0WYaMdXlwU2ymdAV7Lv/s640/Jorgenfist+Fortress.jpg
joriandrake: ( the tree strong guys probably do it better without the 10 str elf also attempting it  )
joriandrake: three*
Smon: GM: You push off, the current catches the canoe and you head swiftly downstream. It's hard work oarring the fast flowing mountain river but you make very good time as you surge down the white waters, you should reach the Storrval Deep by evening.
Smon: The river runs down through the Iron Peaks, rising majestically about you.
Smon: With three high level barbarians oarring, your Athletics checks auto-pass and you make great time, passing over rapids and down quieter stretches - it is in one such in early afternoon as the boat approaches a bend in the river that you hear the sounds of battle ahead!
joriandrake: Drak is ready to warn the others of any dangers he might spot
JamesDevil: Claw slow down rowing
JamesDevil: "lets not get too ahead of our selves"
joriandrake: (Danger, WIll Robinson! =p )
JamesDevil: "we need to see whats going on first"
JamesDevil: have we gone around thee bend yet?
Smon: Then the boat turns the bend round a steep bank and see ahead a small campsite on a narrow meadow, where two brutal hill giants swing massive tree-clubs at a lone warrior - a very muscular flame-haired Shoanti female, clearly over 7' tall - must have Goliath blood. She swings a great axe, cutting a giant's thigh, but receives a massive blow in return that would crush the bones of most men.
DESTROYERBILL: we must help her
Smon: /roll d20+2
Smon rolls 1d20+2 and gets: 1, (+2) = 3
JamesDevil: "a fellow Shantai, to arms!"#
Smon: The giants are oblivious to your approach.
JamesDevil: Claw rows hard towards the giants
Smon: https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxy02KcHi4lmge14b5L3lM949O68EyJ6FbSNy3300AY627-p0J_6DqZjPqaB6kWqFM_3ajDp_cFBYW9epWtM6n7zIhLMSQh6J0JOZeZJJuX6_ohsF5zY5yN-YZbiEoYDN1HR82w7dDWK-R/s400/Rukvara%252C+Shoanti+Goliath.jpg
joriandrake: "Shall I wait for a better chance, or just shoot now?" Drakhaien asks
Sandor Sunneson: attack
JamesDevil: hold till we're closer
JamesDevil: we need to get into melee range first
Smon: ok the barbarians row the boat swiftly to the shallow bank by the meadow - roll init pls
JamesDevil Rolls 1d20+4x2 and gets:

joriandrake: 39 hp from readied attack, full turn attack on same giant
Smon: The arrow takes the giant in its massive neck, it roars in pain and surprise, turning as the boat hits the bank and the barbarians leap to shore.
joriandrake: might not be unseen after this
joriandrake rolls 1d20+10 and gets: 3, (+10) = 13
Smon: J you get one shot not two
Smon: stop trying to abuse the rules
joriandrake: I shot the readied attack, now comes my action at 23 Simon
Smon: You can't "ready" out of combat
Smon: In-world you can't keep an arrow pulled for more than a couple seconds, either
Smon: Init determines when you act
Smon: If I want to give you a free attack I'll let you know
joriandrake: as you wish, turn end
Smon: #20 Claw

DESTROYERBILL: its brutal critical

JamesDevil: it goes up as you level, 19 is when it tops out me thinks

Smon: no 3 dice at 17 is max
DESTROYERBILL: caps at 17

Sandor Sunneson: +18
DESTROYERBILL: yeah me to
Sandor Sunneson: =52 damage
Smon: 52 dmg thx
Smon: The giant is badly wounded, screams in agony
Smon: The Shoanti girl leaps at it, shining greataxe swinging...

joriandrake: (nice, she killed it, good battle ending scene )
JamesDevil: Claw holds his hand out for a full arm clasp with the Shoanti woman
JamesDevil: "Good to see a fellow Shoanti, tell me which clan do you hail from?"
Smon: She turns, grinning at Claw (especially) & Sandor through bloodied lip. "Thanks! That might have gone ill for me. She gives Claw a firm arm clasp in true macho Shoanti fashion.
Smon: "Bearkiller Clan, of the northern peaks."
Smon: She looks at Claw's tribal markings, her eyes widen. "Your Clan is dead! Slain by the ogres of Hook Mountain, aye?"
JamesDevil: "Indeed"
JamesDevil: Clan is visible sadneddened by the memory but not enoughfor the others to see
JamesDevil: the others in his group*
joriandrake: "Hm, if he's alive the clan isn't dead, through his memories and blood they live on." Drakhaien remarks after a moment considering Claw possibly still restoring the clan
JamesDevil: "what bring you so far south?"
Smon: /roll d20+3
Smon rolls 1d20+3 and gets: 4, (+3) = 7
Smon: "I am Rukvara, Hunter of my clan... a giant was raiding our herd. I followed it south to the river, which marks the southern edge of Bearkiller land... I did not expect two of them!"
Sandor Sunneson: They won't be bothering you anymore
joriandrake: (Drakhaien looks around for signs of more of the giants being nearby)
JamesDevil: "The giants have been getting riled up up across the land sadly"
Smon: She nods to Sandor. "The giants have become more aggressive again lately... some force..." Looking at the corpse of the one she slew, you notice on its cleft neck a Rune - the Rune of Greed.
DESTROYERBILL: i check their pockets
JamesDevil: Claw follows her eye line
Smon: Drakhaien checks around, spots where the two giants crept up on the camp .
JamesDevil: "a servant of greed
JamesDevil: "
Sandor Sunneson: Sandor will check the other one SB isn't checking
JamesDevil: "tell me, have you see others with runes like those?
Smon: Claw recalls how the stone giants of Mokmurian had the Rune, how anything that dies with the Rune feeds Karzoug's power...
joriandrake: "There is where the giants crept up on the camp from" Drak shows the route to the others
DESTROYERBILL: hey rukvara want some fine elven wine to calm youre nerves or just to get wasted
Smon: Rukvara frowns, nods. "Yes... in the past year or so. Ogres mostly, but here and there a giant, two. They seem almost reckless - a giant cult?"
Smon: SB roll Persuade
Smon: The giants have filthy stinking pelts
Smon: /roll d6x2
Smon Rolls 1d6x2 and gets:
3 = 3
4 = 4

JamesDevil: "they are serving the runelord of Greed"
DESTROYERBILL rolls 1d20+6 and gets: 6, (+6) = 12
Smon: No treasure on them
Smon: Ruk nods and takes the wine bottle, swigs half of it.
Sandor Sunneson: nowt here group
JamesDevil: "unfortunately by killing them we have likely strengthened him"
joriandrake: "Or maybe some powerful giant gathered them under the banner of some common goal" Drakhaien says, still watching the direction the giants came from
Smon: "Thanks... tasty."
JamesDevil: "Where will you head next? back north to your tribe?
DESTROYERBILL: its very storong it cost 25gp a bottle from an elven city
Sandor Sunneson: Sandor sees if there is a spike or branch of some kind he can put the head of one of the giants on
DESTROYERBILL: i have a spear
joriandrake: (and do you wish to leave the spear here with a giant's head on?)
Smon: Ruk nods. "It's a day back to our camp - I should go tell the elders our goats are safe again!"
DESTROYERBILL: no i dont want to leave it here its a +3 spear
JamesDevil: "Claw smiles, i may come to visit at a later date, it has been a long time since i have been among a tribe of my own kind
joriandrake: "You're wounded. There is no doubt in your prowes as a mighty warrior, but perhaps you would prefer us as escort back to your camp?"
Smon: There are scrubby trees and thick bushes. Sandor finds a dead tree he can mount the giant head on.
joriandrake: "There might be other giants on your way back"
Sandor Sunneson: Sandor ready to press on after he's done that,
Smon: Ruk smiles warmly at Claw: "You will be welcome amongst the Bearkiller." She turns to Drakhaien. "Stone's endurance took the worst of it - give me a short rest to catch my breath and I'll be good to travel. Why don't you stay for some lunch? I have fish..."
JamesDevil: "sounds like a fine idea, Claw pulls out some rations and sits down next to the fire sharing them with Ruk"
joriandrake: Drak looks at the others for their opinion on staying a bit
Smon: Ruk to Drak, considering: "I only saw one pair tracks - but two attacked here ...there could be more north of here, but I doubt it."
Smon: Rukvara gets the fire going again as you talk.
Smon: munch munch
joriandrake: "Both giants came from same place, there might be a camp of sorts for the giants"
Sandor Sunneson: Or we head down the river and press on??
joriandrake: "What do you say Claw, Sandor? Shall we check where their tracks lead us after the rest?"
Sandor Sunneson: Not fussed, hill giants are hardly known for their treasure
JamesDevil: "we should probably push on, we still have a long way ahead of us....I will return Ruk...."
JamesDevil: Claw smiles
Smon: >>"...I will return Ruk..." Ruk grins at Claw: "I look forward to it."
JamesDevil: ooc your going to make me blush Simon
Smon: LOL GM: Majority vote to continue down river while Ruk heads home?
JamesDevil: looks like it
Smon: GM: After lunch you get ready to leave.
Smon: /roll 3d12+9
joriandrake: fine then
Smon rolls 3d12+9 and gets: 5, 3, 8, (+9) = 25
Smon: Ruk is SR'd and back at full hp w stone's endurance recharged
Smon: Ruk gives Claw a good-bye arm clasp. "Stay alive out there."
JamesDevil: "You too to"
JamesDevil: ooc stupid typos
joriandrake: "Be ever watchful" Drakhaien bows a bit and says as the others also say their farewells
Smon: "No worries."

GM: You get back in the canoe and continue the swift voyage downstream. That evening as the sun lowers over the mountains the river opens out into the vast dark waters of the Storrval Deep.

DESTROYERBILL: sorry i was distracted morden khanines tomb of foes arived and i got a bit caught up in it
joriandrake: Drakhaien continues to watch for any events or enemies on the shores
Sandor Sunneson: Sandor uses his eagle vision to see if he sees any potential monsyters
Smon: You paddle along the north shore, as darkness falls looking for a good campsite - they say Black Magga takes boats that stay on the lake after nightfall...
DESTROYERBILL: i do the same
Smon: /roll d20
Smon rolls 1d20 and gets: 7,
JamesDevil: "we'll drag the boat into the trees once night falls
JamesDevil: "so we are completely off the shore
Smon: GM: No giant Kraken attacks your little canoe and you soon find a good lakeshore campsite in an inlet, the Iron Peaks rising almost sheer from the deep waters here.
Smon: You disembark and get the canoe up into the scrubby trees.
joriandrake: (Gith are fun, many good monsters in the TOme too Bill)
DESTROYERBILL: yeah
Smon: Out on the lake you hear plops as the fish are rising to take the duskbugs hovering over the dark waters.
DESTROYERBILL: i looked at the dragon demons
Smon: Great fishing here, looks like.
joriandrake: +Continue on in the night, or set up camp?" Drak asks
JamesDevil: "set camp, we all have eagle vision so we'll take turns on watch"
Sandor Sunneson: Camp up??
Smon: The rugged shore is definitely not good for traversing in darkness, the barbarians can tell.
Smon: Once safely ashore you set camp.
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 1,
joriandrake: "I can keep watch for most of the night, except the last shift, four hours of rest is enough for me" Drakhaien smiles and tells Claw
JamesDevil: "if you see something with tentecles movesing in the lakes towards us wake evreryone up
Sandor Sunneson: boo
Smon: Scouting around finds nothing threatening, and your night passes peacefully.
Smon: 21/4 Next morning as sunrise sweeps golden light across the Deep, you get going, oarring along the north shore.
Smon: James can you msg Keelia?
joriandrake: Is she in Arabia already?
JamesDevil: i ded at half past, no response, i'll mesage here again
Smon: (@Jorian yes and still alive she said yesterday)
JamesDevil: She'es in Dubi
JamesDevil: her apartment has a beautiful view
JamesDevil: wifi is terrible though and she was waiting on a new sim card
Sandor Sunneson: nice
Smon: GM: You oar swiftly on, a little afternoon you leave behind the Iron Peaks and see to your left/north the great Storval River flowing into the lake.
Smon: According to your maps you should reach the mouth of the Kazaron river by nightfall.
Smon: /roll d8
Smon rolls 1d8 and gets: 1,
joriandrake: Drak continues to watch for anything of interest
Smon: Afternoon, a heavy rainstorm comes in off the Kodar Mountains far to the north, wind whips the lake and you are soon drenched.
Smon: Do you want to keep rowing or set in to shore?
Smon: Drakhaien is feeling cold and fairly miserable, huddled in the prow - city life is much more comfy.
JamesDevil: lets set into shore, i don't want to get over turned in the lake
Sandor Sunneson: sure, if thats where we re going, or we go to a sheltered spot if there is 1??
joriandrake: "Eh.... rain, no decent inn or tavern anywhere nearby"
Smon: GM: The north shore here has a narrow swathe of scrubland soon giving way northwards to the rolling plains of the Cinderlands - this time of year they are lush and green, but in a few months will be tinder-dry.
joriandrake: "We could porhap pass through the Cinderlands?"
joriandrake: perhaps*
Smon: You easily find a good spot to set in (SB & Claw auto pass Athletics checks so no rowing rolls needed)
Smon: You get a tent set up to shelter from the driving ice-cold rain (does not bother Claw - cold adaptation)
JamesDevil: it takes us a bit off course
joriandrake: Drakhaien inspects the spot for risk of river overflowing here
DESTROYERBILL: im probably okay becouse im a fire type dragon born so i would give off alot of body heat
Sandor Sunneson: hppy to go wherever
Smon: According to your map, Guiltspur lies a little over 100 miles to the NE, about three days either across the plains or rowing upriver.
Sandor Sunneson: head somewhere for an increased chance of an encounter and fight
Sandor Sunneson: plains??
Smon: The deep lake shows no sign of rising significantly from the rain.
Smon: >> GM: The north shore here has a narrow swathe of scrubland soon giving way northwards to the rolling plains of the Cinderlands - this time of year they are lush and green, but in a few months will be tinder-dry.<<
joriandrake: "Seems like this is a nice, safe shelter from the rain, all is well" Drahaien grins and warms himself at a fire
Smon: Roll Survival DC 15 to get a fire going
JamesDevil: "We'll head north by canoe, using the shrubs
DESTROYERBILL rolls 1d20+7 and gets: 9, (+7) = 16
joriandrake: I just use a Fire Bolt
JamesDevil rolls 1d20+7 and gets: 4, (+7) = 11
DESTROYERBILL: i use my flaming sword to light the fire
joriandrake: Almsot all of us got a 'lighter'
joriandrake: almost*
DESTROYERBILL: ive got two
Smon: Your fire blazes merrily, hissing in the rain, and you cook some rations.
DESTROYERBILL: my sword and my breath attack
Smon: /roll d8
Smon rolls 1d8 and gets: 4,
joriandrake: eh... please doN't use your breath, it is area I believe
Smon: The rain storm doesn't look likely to pass over before nightfall. Do you want to camp here?
DESTROYERBILL: i know and it would be a waist so i just use my flaming sword
DESTROYERBILL: sure
joriandrake: Yep
JamesDevil: We'll camp till the next day then move up through the srub lands"
JamesDevil: don't wanna risk getting exhausted
joriandrake: "I'll be able to ride once in the plains, but are you also able to become quicker in travel?" Drakhaien asks from the others
Sandor Sunneson: sounds good
Smon: GM: Claw's not at much risk of exhaustion due to his Goliath blood, but Drak is a lot more vulnerable & needs careful tending.
Smon: OK you camp overnight by the lake...
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 1,
joriandrake: I'M a delicate elven detective after all
Smon: Looks like the rain deters the monsters....
Sandor Sunneson: booo
JamesDevil: ooc Keelia will be atleast another 20 mins, traffic is terrible
joriandrake: "Finally, some peace and quiet"
Smon: 22/4/19
Smon: /roll d8
JamesDevil: "lets move out people...and not people..."
Smon rolls 1d8 and gets: 2,
Smon: A grey cold dawn, still raining though the wind has died down.
DESTROYERBILL: who you calling not people
JamesDevil: "Let us know if you need a break Drak"
joriandrake: Yeah, Drak also raises an eyebrow at this "Did you assume our species?" ()
Smon: You start off north-eastwards across the Cinderlands towards the distant peaks of the mighty Kodar Mountains over a hundred miles distant. Some say they are the highest mountains in the world...
JamesDevil: "reminds me of home..."
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 3,
joriandrake: "... please tell me we don't have to climb that"
Smon: The first day passes...
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 3,
JamesDevil: "well YOU do"
JamesDevil: HA!
Smon: and the second...
joriandrake: "This is like a fun camping trip... except the lack for a warm bath and good meal at the inn after it"
Smon: 3rd day - the land is more rugged now, the vast mountains rise close to the north.
JamesDevil: "have you ever been camping? thats not really how it works"
Smon: /roll d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 2,
joriandrake: "Oh I was camping quite often, but only for short trips"
Sandor Sunneson: and sharing toilets, and hoping that when you go to use the toilet in the afternoon or evening its still in a respectable state
Smon: Still no encounters, but you start to see more signs of activity - giant tracks, broken trees and boulders, a dearth of wildlife.
JamesDevil: "hmm, starting to to think we should just start rowing up the river, it might save us time"
joriandrake: Drak shivers as Sandor mentions the toilet
Smon: You camp that night in the foothills.
joriandrake: Drakhaien takes all watches except last one again
Smon: Next day - area map - https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmbMvdS0MEj82x-WdrkFwhJ14DU08h25onkOefjbeHkM4rJKqV0W2JD7OrGQ-wOzuyR1F0EQkmxUSv2jFsL40DTO2Ea0ukOVklfbY6gIKgLz6iLBDWtFDhgKj9uRRTNRsS1ivG8U1OoF7Y/s640/Guiltspur+environs.jpg
Smon: You start casting about for the Guiltspur - roll Survival DC 20 everyone
JamesDevil rolls 1d20+7 and gets: 9, (+7) = 16
joriandrake: (casting about?)
DESTROYERBILL rolls 1d20+7 and gets: 16, (+7) = 23
Sandor Sunneson rolls 1d20+8 and gets: 18, (+8) = 26
joriandrake rolls 1d20+1 and gets: 11, (+1) = 12
JamesDevil: Claw is distracted think about Ruk still
joriandrake: "Too much ... nature"
Smon:  @Jamz

Taking to wing, SB spots a great shard of green glass rising from a narrow mountain valley to the east/north/east about 10 miles off. Sandor meanwhile picks up giant tracks in a gorge heading same way.

Sandor Sunneson: folks, footprints 'ere..............
joriandrake: Drak inspects them
DESTROYERBILL: i can see a castle
JamesDevil: "eh, maybe when we meet them i can have a quick chat"
Smon: SB rises higher to get a good look at the valley of the green spire, it is clearly fortified at a giant scale https://images-wixmp-ed30a86b8c4ca887773594c2.wixmp.com/intermediary/f/adf9ae67-473f-4fdd-9ad7-10f7f4462fda/da21lkt-d5a0402b-87f3-44ab-80f6-77b62c0c9304.jpg/v1/fill/w_894,h_894,q_70,strp/guiltspur_by_bigrin42_da21lkt-pre.jpg
JamesDevil: which way are the footprints heading?
joriandrake: "We might have found the giant's primary base"
Smon: east towards the valley of the spire
JamesDevil: "ok, lets move towards the spire, stay in cover, we all have eagle sight so lets start scouting out the place
Smon: The spire is at the north end of a wide valley; blocked off by a 20' high stockade of tree trunks. Two 45' tall wartchtowers flank an immense wooden gate.
10:12am  2019-2-09 Keelia Has entered the room
DESTROYERBILL: hi kellia
Keelia: sorry i'm late
joriandrake: hi
JamesDevil: hi Keelia, your just inn time
Smon: It looks like the only overland approach is from the south, it would take days of rock climbing to cross overland from W N or E
Sandor Sunneson: Hi Keelia, unfort not many XP gained so far, only 1 fight
Smon: Hi Keelia
DESTROYERBILL: i report back there are 3 balistas a gate at the south east and a big green orb north east i recomend an attack from the right flank
Keelia: great. hi everyone.
Smon: GM: Quillax you have been scouting ahead in bird form
JamesDevil: any giants on guard?
joriandrake: "Hmm... flying ones could go around the stockade and towers ( Eagle Sight might have good synergy with my passive perc/inv)
Keelia: excellent  thanks simon
Smon: The group have just reached Guiltspur travelling overland for 3 days from the Storrval Deep where you left your canoe
Smon: SB roll Perception w advtg
DESTROYERBILL Rolls 1d20+7x2 and gets:
1 (+7) = 8
2 (+7) = 9

Smon: Nothing to see there SB
DESTROYERBILL: i can only see fortifications i gues
Smon: You'd have to fly much closer to see any giants, & they'd see you too
JamesDevil: are the fortifications within 1 mile?
Smon: >>are the fortifications within 1 mile?<< 10 miles east of camp, 3 hours travel by the easy route or 2-3 days otherwise
Smon: SB you land & report your findings.
JamesDevil: ok, so were coming from the east...
Smon: @Keelia On the way here Claw met a cute Goliath chick fighting hill giants
joriandrake: "aww... we still have to camp outside for a couple more days" The elf looks disheartened
Smon: The party & Rukvara Bearkiller made short work of the 2 giants
JamesDevil: "I don't trust that orb thing, but so i tjhinkk we should clear the giants out (if there anre any) before we go in
Keelia: I'm sure Quillax would have been acting as Wing Woman best she could for her friend
Smon: you're 10 miles west
Smon:https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmbMvdS0MEj82x-WdrkFwhJ14DU08h25onkOefjbeHkM4rJKqV0W2JD7OrGQ-wOzuyR1F0EQkmxUSv2jFsL40DTO2Ea0ukOVklfbY6gIKgLz6iLBDWtFDhgKj9uRRTNRsS1ivG8U1OoF7Y/s640/Guiltspur+environs.jpg
Keelia: (we could try to send Claw to negotiate instead of just killing all things Giant?)
Smon: If you had continued upriver would have arrived east of the Spire
joriandrake: Even if we do try to negotiate, better if none of us go alone
JamesDevil: ok, then i'm thinking we head down from the west, clear out either the building or the ballistias
Smon: >>Quillax would have been acting as Wing Woman<< literally, she was scouting ahead as a bird at the time
Keelia:
JamesDevil: the basilstas may agro anyway
DESTROYERBILL: q
JamesDevil: but if we clear the building then we should only get them and not the gate guards
joriandrake: COuld also do something like summon fire and lighting on the ballistas with our druid's aid hmm
DESTROYERBILL: does quillax have save spells or physical attack spells
joriandrake: Not that we have to in case they aren't manned
Smon: Crossing the rugged mountain peaks to approach valley directly from west will be a bunch of Athletics checks and Exhaustion saves. The bbns shoud be ok, and Quillax can just fly as a bird. Or you can follow trail and come in from south - much faster, save 2-3 days.
JamesDevil: ooc how to scale is this map? could we jump down onto the building?
Smon: brb
Keelia: @Bill - what do you mean save spells?
joriandrake: Wait, we are to climb the mountain peaks?
Keelia: and physical attack spells?
DESTROYERBILL: a spell were they save against your dc
Keelia: She has some spells, eg, Call Lighting, and such
DESTROYERBILL: and a spell where you attack
joriandrake: follow trail and come from South is my vote
JamesDevil: if we hit those balistas the entire camp WILLknow we are here and hit use all at once, we are better off ssplitting them up and kiling them off in groups
Keelia: She doesn't carry many save spells, bad guys have a tendency to save against them.
DESTROYERBILL: i have a special cheese for spellcasters that give -2 to save but you have -1 to hit
joriandrake: I just hope not all of them have +10 to their saves
JamesDevil: the trail means we hit them head on, we lose any sense of surpise
JamesDevil: plus the balistas are already pointed that way expecting an attck
joriandrake: Bill - what do you mean -2 to saves, don't you mean their spells have +2 to spell DC?
DESTROYERBILL: yeah
Keelia: Aside from Hold Person, and polymorph (which she saves in case someone in the team is about to die and needs to be changed into a Giant Ape for HP), most of hers is more attack or travel
joriandrake: because if that's the case Drak would like to have some cheese
joriandrake: (how long is the cheese benefit duration?)
Keelia: She tends to fight as an elemental instead of throwing around magic
DESTROYERBILL: okay then but you will have a lower chance of hitting like if you had +10 it would be +9
JamesDevil: if we come from the south then we should attack from the west of the west tower, it gives us cover from the east tower
DESTROYERBILL: 1 hour
JamesDevil: can anyone maake illusions?
joriandrake: OK, Drakhaien will take some cheese then, but not eat it yet , and thanks
Keelia: @James, yes
Keelia: Major illusion, once per day
DESTROYERBILL: okay its called truvan beaver cheese
Keelia: sorry *Major Image
Keelia: same thing
joriandrake: I can cast Invisibility and nondetection
Sandor Sunneson: I'm with James
JamesDevil: right, if Quillax can make an illuision at the same time as we move up we can reach the est side of the west tower, the climb and attack the next round
Keelia: ....beaver cheese????
JamesDevil: hop down to the outside of the gate and reapeat for the east tower
DESTROYERBILL: its just the name of it i didnt make the name
joriandrake: I could as such cast Invisibility at once on two people, lasting for a hour
Keelia: I know. But that just boggles the mind.
Smon: (back)
joriandrake: I doN't even want to know what that cheese is made out of as long it works
JamesDevil: everyone cool with the plan?
Keelia: What are we trying to do exactly?
joriandrake: yep, what plan?
JamesDevil: dash to the west side of the west tower, with an= illusion to dissract the gate guards so they face tio the east somewhere
JamesDevil: next round climb up the tower in some fashion and kill the guards then hop down by the gate, move to the next tower
DESTROYERBILL: oh the chesse is maid out of pure chaos magical mushrooms and dairy
joriandrake: Just tell Drak if you wish him to cast Invisibility on two people - it could be done like from a 50 minute distance of the fortifications
JamesDevil: kill them and doen into the camp
JamesDevil: then move up using the pcliff/path bits as cover from the balistas attack them then clear the building
JamesDevil: does that sound like a good plan to everyone?
Smon: GM: OK so you head overland to the valley of the Guiltspur, Drak taking point to watch for ambushes. 3 hours later you approach the valley from the south - past the stockade the land rises up steeply to the wooden fortress. You make out several mammoths browsing on the slope.
DESTROYERBILL: yeah
joriandrake: "Mammoths!"
Smon: The mammoths look odd - SB w your dragonsight you can see their fur seems matted with - tar?
JamesDevil: -.-
DESTROYERBILL: thats odd
joriandrake: (They browsing the internet so we should be safe as they're distracted  )
Keelia: @james, sure.
JamesDevil: maybe a trap, like setting pigs on fire and setting them on fire to scare elephants (happened in the real world)
Smon: Beyond the stockade a switchback trail covered by the ballistae rises up to the timber fort. You don't see anyone manning the giant ballistae.
JamesDevil: @simon can we go around them?
DESTROYERBILL: could be but to scare what
Keelia: (I was going to suggest just that O,o)
DESTROYERBILL: i have an o
DESTROYERBILL: oops
JamesDevil: invaders bill
Smon: Drakhaien spots a single hill giant sentry in each of the watchtowers' covered viewing platforms.
Sandor Sunneson: I'm signing off at 11 folks
JamesDevil: wouldn't you be scared of a mamoth stamppeeding towards you on fire?
joriandrake: "One guard per tower on the platforms"
Sandor Sunneson: will be around next Saturday till around 11 again
Smon: >>@simon can we go around them?<< The fliers could, SB could carry Drak. Claw is more problematic.
joriandrake: (Bill, what is that dragon sight?)
JamesDevil: "whatxs the range on the illusion spell?"
Smon: (as eagle sight Jo)
DESTROYERBILL: i have an idea i use my flame sword to set one of my arrows alight then shoot it at the mommath it could possibley panik and go into the giants base and that whould be a big distraction
joriandrake: k
joriandrake: "Umm... why not let me turn two of you invisible, so you just walk in and kill two guards at same time on the towers?"
Keelia: 120 feet for major image
JamesDevil: no gareetee that they will head that way Bill
JamesDevil: how far to the gate Smn?
DESTROYERBILL: no garrentee but theres a possibiletey
DESTROYERBILL: and i dout it whould run this way either
Smon: You are about 200' from the stockade, any closer the sentries will likely spot you.
joriandrake: "I'll stay here and snipe at them"
JamesDevil: are the cliff climbable?
Sandor Sunneson: could maybe wait till it getsbdark and
Smon: >>are the cliff climbable?<< Eventually but would take a long time
joriandrake: (200 feet is pretty close, I can shoot at them at a 600 feet distance)
Keelia: If you can find somewhere safe to hide for 1 minute, Quillax can cast wind walk on everyone. But it takes 1 minute to turn back to normal form.
DESTROYERBILL: come on it will be more fun if we set the mammoths on fire and if were sneaky about it they might not see us and be distracted by a mammoth on fire
Keelia: You can fly and have a move of 300'
joriandrake: nice
Keelia: you can't do anything but fly / dash in clouds form, so you would need a safe place to change back to solid
JamesDevil: tell you what Bill, you set them on Fire and run along side them as a distraction and we'll attack and we'll move uip, sound ood?
JamesDevil: cool*
Keelia: but you can change back and forth to cloud form for up to 8 hours.
joriandrake: Using Keelia's spell we could position ourselves on top of cliff to strike at them from a higher ground
DESTROYERBILL: why run along side them that is dangerous we set them alight from afar and watch the rampage
Sandor Sunneson: Is there anything wooden in site within the castle? e.g. wooden roof or something??
Smon: https://images-wixmp-ed30a86b8c4ca887773594c2.wixmp.com/intermediary/f/adf9ae67-473f-4fdd-9ad7-10f7f4462fda/da21lkt-d5a0402b-87f3-44ab-80f6-77b62c0c9304.jpg/v1/fill/w_894,h_894,q_70,strp/guiltspur_by_bigrin42_da21lkt-pre.jpg There is a spoil heap east of the fort, and some kind of cleft in the ground on the west side of the green spire, which rises a few hundred feet above the valley floor.
joriandrake: (I feel like there's at least two different vertical discussions going on at same time) - that cleft could be perfect for Drak to shoot from
Smon: >>Is there anything wooden in site within the castle? e.g. wooden roof or something??<< It's made of wood. You can see smoke rising from the central chimney. With recent rains it'll be pretty wet.
Sandor Sunneson: sorry, pictured it as something else, thanks for image
JamesDevil: Ok, everyone else get up top, i'll try to climb up and use eagle flight and one of you can come back for me to speed things up
JamesDevil: we can set stuff on fir from there
Smon: (You can't see the slag heap from where you are currently, it's cut off by the eastern cliffs which also rise a few hundred feet)
joriandrake: or maybe let Quillax cast the fly/cloud spell?
JamesDevil: Ok, the cloud spell then
JamesDevil: can we just move this along please? we need to stop talking about
Keelia: Quillax wil cast Wind Walk on the group
joriandrake: good, no need to climb then and we seem like happy little clouds to guards if they spot us
Keelia: Anyone who wants to go to the cliff, can
Keelia: Anyone who wants to go to the guards, can, but you need to find somewhere you can wait for 1 minute to change forms
JamesDevil: right, up the cliff so we have a high vantage point
Smon: GM: OK Quillax you cast Wind Walk (takes a minute to cast)
joriandrake: Cloud-Drak will hover after cloud-Claw
Smon: You all turn into wisps of cloud.
Sandor Sunneson: cool
Smon: You can now fly up to the cliffs overlooking the valley from W N or E
DESTROYERBILL: im going to go shoot at the mammoths soon becouse i think its a good idea
DESTROYERBILL: fine ill go with the cloud plan
Smon: >>right, up the cliff so we have a high vantage point<< which side?
joriandrake: (Cloud-Drakhaien hovers after Cloud-Claw, so whichever side he picks)
JamesDevil: North i think, clear the build, hit that cleft think and get a decent viw
Smon: You can fly unseen and approach from any angle, land on the cliff top to change back safely, or even land in the narrow gap between cliff & spire out of view of the fort?
joriandrake: we could also try go all around while flying?
JamesDevil: @are there any door on the back of the fort?
Smon: GM: OK as clouds you fly W up over the cliffs, round to N, landing on the north side.
Smon: The fort only seems to have one gate, at the W end of the south side.
joriandrake: afk brb
Sandor Sunneson: any movement within fort>??
JamesDevil: hmm, ok, lets sneak west kill off the Balistas as quitely as we can then kill whatever comes out of the fort
Smon: From atop the northern cliffs you get a good look into the cleft - about 30' deep, it has clearly been excavated. Ramps wind down along the cleft sides to the floor, where you can see an opening in the west side of the blue-green Guiltspur itself. Several giants with pick axes - three you count - are mining here, down in the cleft, working on clearing the rock from around the spire.
JamesDevil: not west, weast
joriandrake: back
Sandor Sunneson: sounds a rather grim existence
Smon: Also from here looking south you can see the tarry mammoths on the slopes, and there are two more non-tarry mammoths behind the stockade each with a hill giant handler.
Smon: The giants wear heavy hide armour that looks well crafted, not like the rough furs on the two you killed earlier.
JamesDevil: can we see if the balists are maned at the moment?
Smon: The ballistas are right now hidden by the fort, but they were unmanned before.
joriandrake: "If you want to talk, yo ucould try to speak with the miners?"
joriandrake: (If you can speak Giant tongue?)
JamesDevil: I doubt they will listen
JamesDevil: I can speack giant
Smon: Roll Perception or Insight DC 25
joriandrake: (I doubt it too, but I am fine with trying as per Quillax's suggestion)
Sandor Sunneson: talk??? they would attack and kuill
JamesDevil: but i think they severe thegreed lord
JamesDevil: ok, new plan we enter the fort and clear it
joriandrake: pp 26
joriandrake rolls 1d20 and gets: 18,
joriandrake: 29 active perc
Sandor Sunneson rolls 1d20+6 and gets: 1, (+6) = 7
Sandor Sunneson: lol
Sandor Sunneson: the babs roll
DESTROYERBILL: how far away are tar mammoths
Sandor Sunneson: barbs
Smon: Drakhaien notices that the giant miners in the cleft are moving oddly, and their skin is a pasty yellow grey - they look sickly.
JamesDevil rolls 1d20+7 and gets: 14, (+7) = 21
DESTROYERBILL rolls 1d20+7 and gets: 9, (+7) = 16
joriandrake: "...the miners look ill.... or maybe undead"
Smon: The mammoths are about 300' away on the ground & 300' below you. So ca 450' bowshot.
joriandrake: "This range if perfect for my bow" Drak says
JamesDevil: we'll get to them after the fort is cleared, Claw flys down to the ground just west of the fort entrence
joriandrake: is*
Keelia rolls 1d20+13 and gets: 18, (+13) = 31
joriandrake: Drak is reluctant to give up an ideal shooting platform
joriandrake: also: wow Keelia
Smon: GM: Claw-cloud flies down into the gap between western cliffs and fort - a good hidden spot to turn back into non-cloud form.
JamesDevil: If Claw is now visible he'll run into the forts front room
Smon: (Quillax sees the same as Drak)
joriandrake: can Drak shoot at stuff at front range of fort from here? (600 feet range)

JamesDevil: Are we about to lose Jorian/fergus now?
joriandrake: because I think Claw is about to alarm everyone down there now
Sandor Sunneson: I need to go unfort,
joriandrake: I can play a half hour longer
JamesDevil: has Bill disappear as well?
Sandor Sunneson: but will be around next Saturday for 8.30, could do earlier if it suits
Sandor Sunneson: anyway, will read transcript later, have a good weekend
Smon: GM: Shortly before Claw reforms, Drak & SB assume solid form atop the cliff & can shoot
Smon: bye F
JamesDevil: se you Ferg
joriandrake: I guess this is a good spot to stop then, before chaos stast?
joriandrake: starts
joriandrake: bye Fergus
11:02am  2019-2-09 Sandor Sunneson Has exited the room
JamesDevil: can do
DESTROYERBILL: ii put cotton and oil on some of my arrows and i set them alight and fire
Smon: GM: Claw you see the massive double doors of the fort in the south wall of the main tower.
joriandrake: if we shoot at the ill looking giants below that is very fine with me
DESTROYERBILL: im attack tar covered mmamoths
JamesDevil: Claw will door the doors open
joriandrake: i doN't think those are mammoths
joriandrake: they didn't move -adn are tar covered
joriandrake: and
JamesDevil: boot*
Smon: map https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOcUZ2HbGMHSHWmU3KYxSY102H2BSBKgmjz6JQCWf2RtcG0vG0tUOLb0QSTptXE8BXtWHPDjRfu0rcx2u8DSx0XI08fSZjK5GOJNf5VIsj1Sgib-Axdh-_KSVqm3nL5DQdN7zcJruDe-ga/s1600/steading.jpg
joriandrake: (sigh)
JamesDevil: erm, that map is tiny simon
Smon: I know
JamesDevil:
Smon: The mammoths are moving around a bit
Smon: Drak what are you shooting?
JamesDevil: what brb, what does Claw see
Smon: could everyone roll init; right now Claw has 1 more round of turning back
joriandrake: ... Drak asks Qullax what to shoot at as he sees his party scatter around
DESTROYERBILL Rolls 1d20+1x2 and gets:
3 (+1) = 4
8 (+1) = 9

joriandrake: "Sigh, barbarians"
Smon: Did Quillax turn back too so she can talk?
Keelia: Yes
Smon: ok, roll init everyone
Keelia rolls 1d20+3 and gets: 15, (+3) = 18
Keelia: 18 for Q's init
JamesDevil rolls 1d20+4 and gets: 20, (+4) = 24
joriandrake: I will target whatever Quillax is too
joriandrake rolls 1d20+5 and gets: 4, (+5) = 9
joriandrake: 9 for drak
Smon: drak & SB roll off 1 d20 nomods
DESTROYERBILL rolls 1d20 and gets: 2,
JamesDevil: I don't even need to roll with adv
joriandrake rolls 1d20 and gets: 5,
Smon: OK #24 Claw is still turning back #18 Quillax what do you advise Drak to shoot at?
JamesDevil: ffs
Smon: GM BTW you should be out of thrown hill giant rock range up here on the cliff, though not ballista range - but you have cover fr ballistae
Keelia: Great!
joriandrake: perfect, can use cover to use bonus action on hide then
Keelia: we decided to attack the tower, right?
joriandrake: if you decided that, then Drak decided that as well
Smon: There are no targets visible in tower. You can see the tarry mammoths, the 3 sick giants in cleft, 2 mammoths n side of the wall, 2 giants w them.
Smon: The giants in the stockade towers are out of sight due to the tower roofs.
joriandrake: "get rid of those right below us first?"
Keelia: OK, she'll Call Lightning above the 2 mammoths/2 giants
joriandrake: (target decided then: 2 giants with mammoths)
Smon: GM: Call Lightning range is 120'
Smon: It's about 480-500' to the stockade
joriandrake: "Hm, I can wait if you want to hover closer and transform back to cast it, if you wish"
Keelia: Ah, I didn't realise the distance.
Keelia: I have absolutely nothing that goes that far
Keelia: How close are the sick giants?
Smon: You could call lightning over the cleft though I reckon as you could be within 120' vertical distance
Keelia: OK, let's do that.
Smon: Being a bit generous on ranges you can call storm cloud above cleft and have lightning lance down from it
Smon: With a clap of thunder storm clouds appear over the cleft and jagged lightning lances down

DESTROYERBILL: thats a good one jorian
Smon: ok, counts as 1 attack - 23 is exact pass; the timber bar breaks and the gates blast open, revealing the Great Hall beyond...
Smon: The wooden walls of this wide timber room are adorned with dozens of trophies, some of which seem to be still alive judging by their feeble twitchings and cries. The majority of the trophies are animals—bears, aurochs, giant lizards, and a few monsters—but here and there hang the mutilated bodies of orcs or humans. A great fire pit lies in the room’s center, forming a layer of smoke near the ceiling some fifty feet above, while additional torches guttering on the walls only add to the room’s foul scents. Slabs of dubious meat roast slowly over the central fire, while a balcony twenty-five feet above the eastern half of the room looks out over the hall.
JamesDevil: "well this is unsanitary"
JamesDevil: exits?
joriandrake: (test test)
Smon: GM: 7 hill giants and 3 fire giants are lounging in the hall around the fire pit, while a female fire giant commander in gold embossed plate is seated on the balcony above.

JamesDevil: can i get the female between me and the stairs if i dash?
