ep 103 3-4/3/4720 AR Dirty Vekkers

Simon N. (GM):GM: OK you got a Short Rest end of last session and can spend HD if wounded
Chris T.:"So it would seem this petty dwarven mine may lead into hidden Xin-Shalost?"
M has regen 20 so assume any wounds have gone?
Simon N. (GM):The pages of Silas Vekkers' journal detailing route to Xin Shalast were ripped out so can't be sure.
Chris T.:"Either way we must look out for this Eye of Averice."
Jorian Drake:Currently on 56/143, what are the healing house rules again? Or can I jsut spend multiple HD as normal?
Simon N. (GM):As RAW JD
Chris T.:M can use Aura of Vitality if folks need to heal any wounds without dice
Jorian Drake:(also, no voice today?)
Simon N. (GM):M heals 20 hp/round so back to full yup
Drak can spend hd as desired and ask other PCs for healing if necessary :)
no voice
GM: The snow is getting worse outside and it's now far far below freezing out there.
Jorian Drake:Thanks Simon
Chris, not sure how Aura of Vitality works, would that heal 87 hp for Drakh
?
Simon N. (GM):GM: Those of you with Passive Perception 20+ fancy you hear a long ways off a strange and mournful howl.
Chris T.:2-12 points/round up to 10 rounds
in a 30'r
so best used if all the party are low
or during combat
JamesDevil:"...do you guys hear that howling? or am i going crazy?"
Chris T.:M looks blank, she hears nothing
Jorian Drake:(I'll be happy to accept the magic healing but unsure if the others need it, and my HD spending depends on if magic gets used as well)
Drakhaien will alert the others to the howl
Simon N. (GM):To those who heard it, it resembles a mournful, drawn-out shriek not unlike the
cry of a dying elk.
Chris T.:(If you have healing dice and the others do too. Best spend them first. M only gets her spell slots 1/week.)
Quillax:Q nods at Claw - "I hear it"
JamesDevil:"hmm, sounds like like a dying animal"
Chris T.:(If not M willbe happy to cast it)
JamesDevil:"probably nothing"
Quillax:Q throws Drak a pot of Keoghan's from her stash of many
Jorian Drake:(ah I found the aura spell, 2d6 healing for 1 minute, so between 20 and 60 hp healed, would be really helpful, but ok I spend the HD first)
or that
"Thank you Quillax"*
Quillax:She slathers a bunch on herself like sunblock and then shifts into an air elemental form, settling on Claw's backpack
Chris T.:Where on the map are we guys?
Simon N. (GM):Then those of you with PP 20+ hear a faint knocking coming
from the lower portion of the cabin down below, probably the outer door - as if some lost traveler were seeking shelter from
the storm...
Quillax:"Bloody ghosts" she warbles in Auran, completely not understood by anyone in the group :D
Chris T.:M understands :)

Simon N. (GM):GM: Claw and Mal go to the stairwell shaft followed by air-Quillax and Drak and begin heading downstairs to see if someone is at the door The knocking can be clearly heard in the stairwell (PP 10). Then suddenly it stops!
Chris T.:"Thanks Quillax."

looks like it works a bit like in discord
Simon N. (GM):I have 20 Quillax 18 Malassandra 16 Drak 10 - Claw
Chris T.:cool
Simon N. (GM):A loud crack followed by a mighty hammering sound
suddenly fills the cabin as its walls begin to shake and groan,
almost as if the structure were giving up its purchase on the
cliff edge and sliding off!
#20 Quillax your go - you are in the air about halfway up the shaft.
Quillax:(is the house actually moving?)
Simon N. (GM):It's shaking; the rest of them are on the stairs & look likely to be flung off.
You could eg grab someone, retreat upstairs, or continue down
Quillax:She'll hover beside the others and prepare to catch (or shove) anyone who falls off the stairs. Claw should be fine, he's got rage flight
Claw:;)
Simon N. (GM):OK Quillax readies to catch any fallers.
#18 Malassandra roll Acrobatics DC 15
Quillax:Unless Drak uses his bat wing cape, then Q can just grab Mal
Chris T.:(Could someone clarify if the entrance to the caves on the right of the map are accessed from up or down please?)

Quillax:Q will be quietly impressed at how well Mal is managing the swaying stairs :D
Simon N. (GM):Mal races down the bucking stairs, through the lower rooms to the outer door, wind whipping snow into the entry hall. Flinging it open, all she sees is the blizzard. Visibility is about 2'.
#16 Drakhaien roll Acrobatics (DEX) skill DC 15
Chris T.:She uses another of her 'detect evils'
Simon N. (GM):Mal detects strong supernatural evil all arround her.
Jorian Drake:Acrobatics? 26 as passive
Simon N. (GM):No, it's called Reliable Talent :p
Drak Reliably balances on the bucking stairs. What do you do?
Jorian Drake:Drakhain looks if there is a nearby window, even if he tries to fly in the stairway it might be a problem if the building falls on top of him or rolls off the cliff
Any windows nearby?
Simon N. (GM):No
No windows in the stairway

You could flee into the snowstorm if you wish.
Jorian Drake:snowstorm...
Simon N. (GM):It's well below freezing with visibility ca 2'.
Claw might survive the night in it though :p
Jorian Drake:Bonus Action Hide in shadows and the night dim light at door, end turn
Claw:I've got boots that one of you could wear that will work :P

using his Totem flight
Claw:Claw drops down and flies at the last minute flying out ofr the door and landing nnext to Mal
Simon N. (GM):Claw flies down & joins Mal at the outer door. Next round - the hammering shaking and groaning continues; all but floaty-Quillax struggling to remain upright as the ground bucks under you.
#20 Quillax do you join the others watching the lovely snowfall? :D
Quillax:sure :)
Q will hover around them, watching around them with suspicous eyes
Simon N. (GM):OK Quillax joins her companions. It's been about 30 seconds (6 rounds) since the knocking started.
Jorian Drake:(I thought this was our first round?)
(Ah, counted from before init)
Simon N. (GM):Yeah I didn't fancy playing through 6 rounds of not much :D
You're all staying in the antechamber?
Chris T.:M will atempt to drive any wicked spirits from the place. Turn the unholy DC22 Wis.
and yes, staying inside.
Simon N. (GM):What's the range on that Chris?
Chris T.:sight I think.
Will check
30
Jorian Drake:( I guess M thinks the building is undead or posessed by one, Drakh thinks it might either want to fall down, or be a mimic)
Quillax:Q changes to fire elemental to keep the others warmer
Chris T.:nice :)
Simon N. (GM):Mal can't detect anything specific to target. Quillax assumes fire form. The hammering continues, but now the faint images of
starving dwarven ghosts can be glimpsed out of the corner of the eye... You suddenly experiences painful hunger pangs. Very painful... everyone roll DC 13 CON saves.
Mal's aura bonus applies of course.

Quillax:(like Chuck Norris of barbarians :D )
Simon N. (GM):Round 7 (since knocking started) - let me know any actions. Mal you can tell this is a Haunt and not vulnerable to most of the usual means of batle.
I tried adding PCs for each of you
Chris T.:Would she know if radiant damage over a large area may effect it?
Simon N. (GM):It doesn't have hit points so no
Chris T.:okay, thanks.
Quillax:Q turns to Mal {{ do you think if we brought food, would it be good or bad? }} she crackles
Simon N. (GM):Usually there is a specific means of laying a Haunt
Chris T.:Remove Curse maybe?
Claw:Claw raises Garvok, its flames pulsing and lighting up his smiling face
Chris T.:M will try trlease the spirit with a remove curse.
Simon N. (GM):Round 7: Voices can now be heard, in most cases wordless cries
of pain, but now and then snatches of sentences like “eating
us…” or “don’t let him…” or “so hungry….” The hammering
continues, but now the starving ghosts seem to notice you for the first time...
Mal casts Remove Curse - no effect
Chris T.:Hmmm Banihment is the only other thing that comes to mind
Quillax:{{ tell Claw to get some food out of the bag and throw it at them }} she instructs Mal
Chris T.:mal yells at claw to do so.

AFAICT Drak rolled 23 vs DC 22 & saves
Jorian Drake:I lost track of when the heck I am even supposed to act as I had no action taken in '7th' round either
It is easier if I just stand there as a statue
Simon N. (GM):I asked if people were doing anything as nothing new happening & you didn't reply J
Quillax:(we are sort of outside combat, it's like a AoE of psychic, not an active battle)
Jorian Drake:I was waiting for my turn, and I wrote earlier what my plan was anyway, to turn into a bat
Simon N. (GM):OK Drak you are a glowing eyed bat currently.
Jorian Drake:I guess I'm just too stupid to understand what is even going on, I thought we are attacked and engaged with ghosts
anyway, afk, have to attend to my mother
Simon N. (GM):#18 Malassandra tries to Remove Curse on Drak - no effect
Chris T.:frat, end turn.

don't know if possessed counts pve?
Simon N. (GM):GM: I'd need Drakhaien's to-hit bonus and damage to roll, I think the Prot fr Evii will work as Possessed & negate the advtg yup so no Sneak Attack AFAICT

Claw:"Are you YOU?"
Drakhaien:"Not even cooked properly, just raw musclehead"
Drakh gets off the hulking giant and spits repeatedly o nthe ground
Simon N. (GM):A single ghostly dwarf figure is manifesting in the middle of the chamber - you can all see him - the eyeless dwarf you glimpsed before. From the portrait you recognise Silas Vekker, co leader of the expedition.
Claw:"well, hello there"
Simon N. (GM):A balding dwarf
with a dark brown beard. His facial features are
curiously indistinct—he has no eyes, for example, and
when he speaks, his lips barely even move...
“You… you are alive? You do not hunger? Ah…
that is what I sense in your blood. Greed. You seek
Simon N. (GM):the City of Greed. You should abandon your quest,
lest you end up like me. Cold. Dead. Eaten. But I
suspect you cannot be swayed. Know then that I
know the way to Xin-Shalast. I can show you the
way, but only if you bring me my brother. He died
on a ledge in the mountains a mile’s walk north
Simon N. (GM):from this cabin. I can feel his soul out there, still
hungry, still insane. Bring his bones to me so that I
might reconcile with him. Once he is at rest, I will
show you the way so that I might rest as well…”
Drakhaien:Does he actually speak or just seem like that? Oh doesn't matter, Drakh has Observant feat, he could read the lips
Chris T.:Sounds fair
Simon N. (GM):His lips don't move, but you all hear his voice.
As he speaks, bite-sized bits and pieces of him tear loose
and fade, leaving him a growing patchwork of red.
Jorian Drake:(woah lag, there was nothing after Claw's 'hello there' until I pushed send on my own message)
Claw:Claw looks around and says loudly "ok, we have a deal"
Chris T.:He wants us to get his brothers remains from along the ledge
Quillax:(quick summary for J - dwarf ghost appeared, told us to find his brother's bones and bring them back and he'll show us the way)
Claw:He looks back at the other "well, we have a trek ahead of us"
Chris T.:Mal looks out sadly at the freezing blizzard.
"How will we find him in this?"
Claw:I have a pair of Winterlands boots if you are cold
Drakhaien:"We should help them..." Drakh says, between two spits on the ground
Simon N. (GM):Silas nods to Claw. "A deal... yes..." and he fades away.
Claw:You'll be like a midget me :P
Chris T.:(So they require attunement?)
Claw:yes
Drakhaien:(I could use it if it does not require attinement)
oh nope then
Chris T.:hmmm I'm all out of slots
Claw:maybe swap for the time being? up to you though
Drakhaien:What the heck
Simon N. (GM):DC 20 Investigation (Drak auto pass) to recall the rough location mentioned from the dwarf ledgers in the storeroom.
Drakhaien:I will stop attunement to the mask, I barely even wear it because Drakh can't speak with that on
then I can use the boots
Claw:@Drak
Drakhaien:(We still will need a short rest to attune to the boots)
Quillax:Q changes into bear form (polar allowed?) so she can wallk in the cold without being cold
Simon N. (GM):The location of the final Vekker mine is indicated in
that book—at the base of a 2,000-foot-tall cliff in the
mountains, a mile north of the cabin. There should be a mine trail, but won't be easy to follow with all this snow.
Claw:resit to cold, ignore difficult terain cause but snow and ice, ignore low tempretures
Drakhaien tells the others of the location the dwarf spoke of, with as clear directions he can do.
Chris T.:@DM, does the sun sword's radiance generate any heat?
Simon N. (GM):Outside the wind has died down somewhat but it's still snowing heavily.
sun sword is warm but not painfully hot
Drakhaien:If we do a short rest Drakh will attune to the boots and also do ritual Detect Magic to check out the building
Chris T.:Socould be used to keep warm if close by?
Claw:just stand next to Garvok is any of you get cold ;)
Chris T.:Aye, I guess between fiery Quillax and Claw's sword we shouldn't freeze :D
Simon N. (GM):GM: The Haunt seems to have died down for now. You're looking at Disad in the dark on the high DC Survival check to follow the old trail so you may want to wait to morning
Chris T.:Morning sounds good
Simon N. (GM):On a short rest Drak can attune to the boots. Det Evil detects powerful Necromantic aura
from the whole place
Claw:lets wait, i might die from the 2 hit point of damage that Drak did to me
Quillax::D
Chris T.:HP184/184
Quillax:Q swaps over to fire elemental form to keep everyone warmer if they ware waiting out the night.
Simon N. (GM):GM: You can keep warm enough in the upper cabin to avoid freezing overnight, Mal cuddling her sword for warmth. :)
Q rests in the fireplace so as not to burn everyone :)
Chris T.::D
Drakhaien:I can do a ritual hut
Simon N. (GM):Next morning...
Drakhaien:Leomund's Tiny Hut
Simon N. (GM):It's a grey snowy dawn but visibility is up around 10'!
Quillax:Q takes a bear shape
Drakhaien:Drakhaien takes an elven shape
Simon N. (GM):There was once a well worn trail north from the cabin towards the mine. It's covered in snow but can be followed by a Survival check from whoever is going first. :)
Drakhaien:with boots, and no mask
Simon N. (GM):ok
Claw:Eagle sight - Can see up to 1 mile away with no diffculty, does that apply?
Simon N. (GM):No, you still just see snow
Claw:k, fair enough
it would have beeen amusing ;)
Drakhaien:Perception yes, but outdoors Survival is not Drakh's proficiency
Claw:Claw will lead the way

Claw:I have prof at 9, so you are probably better actually
Simon N. (GM):Claw strides off confidently into the blizzard. Quillax assists him pointing out subtle cues he might miss, and you follow the old trail up the mountainside... (DC 17, success)

Simon N. (GM):GM: You hike up into the snowy mountain flank following the trail.
Drakhaien:Drakh is stealthily scouting a bit around assisting with passive perception and investigation
Simon N. (GM):An hour or so later the trail widens into a broad ledge (the one on the map) - you approaching from the south.
Chris T.:ah!
Drakhaien:(I didn't evn think of a proper noble Coat of Arms yet for Drakh's family, I guess I will make one, and it will have a bat on it)
Simon N. (GM):The ledge in question is near the mountain’s peak
above. Trailing to a 5-foot-wide shelf to the northwest
and southeast, the ledge deepens into a large flat area
in the middle. The ground here is rough and uneven,
covered with rubble and rocks and counting as difficult
terrain. Further, a strange layer of thick fog obscures the ground to a
Simon N. (GM):depth of 1 foot. This fog extends out over the cliff so that a character unable
to see through the fog who moves adjacent to the edge might well stumble and fall 2,000-foot to the valley floor below...
Near the eastern end of the ledge, a small number of
gravestones protrude from the mist.
Drakhaien:as it is past dawn, there is likely not enough shade to use bat cape flying
Drak will try to be carefull and not fall below
Claw:Claw uses Garvok like a guiding stick slowly waving it in the fog to avoid falling off
Quillax:Q switches to fire elemental form
and floats ahead, finding the edge and waving the others away from it
Simon N. (GM):The mist parts slightly, you make out a dwarf body lies near a long-dead fire
pit in the eastern portion of the ledge, frozen solid and
preserved by the cold mountain air. The corpse still
wears its padded armor, but is itself in frightful shape.
Not only is it broken and mangled, as if it had fallen
from a great height, but the body’s legs end in charred,
Simon N. (GM):blackened stumps where the feet had been burnt off.
Chris T.:ewww
Simon N. (GM):GM: You carefully pick your way into the wider portion of the ledge, Q-lemental lighting your way. Gravestones ahead and corpse off to your right.
Claw:Could Claw lift him in one piece without him falling apart?
Simon N. (GM):Suddenly the rubble beneath Quillax's fire-feet shifts!
Drakhaien:Drak tiptoes between the graves carefully, observing his surrundings
Claw:Claw's head spin around!
Quillax:{{ watch out }} she sputters
Drakhaien:He will alert the others if he spoits danger
Quillax:She darts up, away from the ground (and anyone that might be reaching out of it)
Simon N. (GM):Drak is approaching the graves - 12 or so, each marked with dwarven names
(including that of Silas Karivek) while Claw is heading for the frozen corpse, when suddenly out of the ground bursts the head of a gigantic Frost Worm! A white purple worm basically. :D
Chris T.:eek

can he do that?
Simon N. (GM):Yes you can move to the nearby gravestones, hide behind them, and still get an attack action.
or just hide if scared :)
Drakhaien:(Should put him 85 ft from worm and likely out of its senses)
Nope. used Dash to move 60 ft and action on stealth, so end turn (no action left for attacks)
Simon N. (GM):You were nearly at the graves as I said earlier so can use your move to reach them & bonus action Hide
Drakhaien:How far would this place Drakh away from the worm? 55 feet?
Simon N. (GM):About 35'
Difficult Terrain
Claw:Boots negate that
Simon N. (GM):ok
Drakhaien:Still, bonus action dash, action hide, will need that 85 feet distance from worm due to its blind/tremor senses and to have lesser risk on archery :)
end turn
Simon N. (GM):The only way to go so far would be to run off down the western path beyond the ledge
in which case no cover to hide (but you can just go Invis w your Sihedron power)
If you hide behind the graves but then break cover you're not hidden
Drakhaien:then this: bonus action Dash there, then use sihedron greater invisibility, end turn
