ep 106 20-21/3/4720 AR The Road to Xin-Shalast, Battle with Cloud Giants

Simon N. (GM):ok
GM: Last session you started following the ethereal River Avah by moonlight to Xin-Shalast.
Malassandra:(Has Mal visited there in the distant past?)
Simon N. (GM):Mal vaguely remembers being taken there as a young guardspaladin in Emperor Xin's bodyguard. Svevenka the ice nymph warned you the upper spires of Xin-Shalast are guarded by an Occluding Field which only lets Karzoug's servants enter.
Malassandra:(Thanks)
"Do w know another way in?"
Jorian Drake:I will try hard to not forget I have a familiar, even if she's likely to be constantly killed and having to resummon with the ritual
Simon N. (GM):KALADURNAE was the Runelord of Xin-Shalast back then, she now recalls; a greedy and unpleasant fellow.
Malassandra:Dhe share the indormation for what it's worth.
Simon N. (GM):Svevenka suggested you seek help from the friendly Skulks who dwell in volcanic tunnels beneath the city, but avoid the ones who have become vampiric minions of the Hidden Beast.
Malassandra:"Perhaps I will be able to derect the evil ones with my sesnes?"
Simon N. (GM):Claw is hiking up into the high mountains along the Avah while his friends fly overhead in a superhero montage :)
Malassandra::)
Jorian Drake:(I browsed the campaign's log on your site and I can't find the Nightmare Rod's 5e version of stats, jsut the link to https://aonprd.com/MagicRodsDisplay.aspx?FinalName=Nightmare%20Rod )
Simon N. (GM):Mal's pegasus has to beat wings hard, for the air grows thin here as you near 20,000 feet.
Malassandra:Are we close enough to set down and search for the volcanic caves?
Simon N. (GM):Nightmare Rod - much the same, but halve DCs and add 5, rounding up, to get 5e DC, eg DC 15 > 8+5=13.
requires attunement of course
Jorian Drake:(OK)
Simon N. (GM):GM: About 8 miles into the mountains the the phantom
waters are joined by an ancient road paved with f lat stones
that have a faint sheen of gold to them. This road continues
north to Xin-Shalast—from this point on, the PCs have a
physical route to follow and need no longer depend upon
the phantom waters of the Avah. The road itself is 100
Simon N. (GM):feet wide, its surface patchy here with swaths of ice but
providing a welcome f lat surface upon which to travel.
Malassandra:Thunfer lazily spirals down to drop Mal on the golden road.
Simon N. (GM):Mal sets foot down beside Claw on the roadway. Following the roadway a couple miles, you spot (PP15+) a large cave entrance on the mountainside above the road to the left. Large boulders partially block the entrance.
Malassandra:"Looks like you're up, Claw."
Jorian Drake:Drakh alerts the others
Simon N. (GM):It's about 60' up a steep slope.
Claw:Claw cracks his knuckles
Simon N. (GM):Drak flaps down to alert the others. Suddenly several enormous cloud giants emerge from the cave, hefting the boulders like pebbles!
Malassandra:"Duck!"
Simon N. (GM):With them is a much shorter, squat & muscular one-eyed frost giant, heavily scarred.
Jorian Drake:A black and a white bat flap as ducks
Claw:Claw yell out in giant: "hold! we mean you no harm or tresspass!"
Simon N. (GM):The frost giant roars and the cloud giants prepare to throw... Claw roll Intimidate please

Claw:"Ha! Bigger than you have said that, and now they are just ashes in the wind" Claw draws Gorvak
Malassandra:(Are these the fellows we aren't supposed to kill as it make Karzoug stronger?)
Simon N. (GM):They are giants in service to Karzoug, apparently
Quillax:(You want them challenged, James?)
Claw:OOC i did try talking :P
Malassandra:"Hold! Bjormundal. I have heard you are a mighty warrior. Would you test your metal against Claw here?" (Persuade?

Quillax:(have a great speech but only Mal understauds Auran :( )
She'll move close enough to drop a ring of wall of fire around the giants, burning side in
Simon N. (GM):The 4 cloud giants are pretty much shoulder to shoulder on the cliffs 15' each giant
The frost giant is 20' below them jumping down to fight Claw
The cave (25' high) is behind the middle 2 cloud giants.
Quillax:She doesn't want to interfere then, so instead she'll lay out the wall of fire in front of the cloud giants to prevent them from interfering also
Simon N. (GM):ok 60' exactly covers the front of the 4 cloud giants :)
Quillax:Although they can't understand her, she'll still scold them: "you are traitors to your own kind, to side with an Enslaver of Giants, who wants only to profit from your deaths."

Simon N. (GM):#12 Drak you are in bat form & currently being ignored
Jorian Drake:Batman flaps up to a height on the side where he has good sight of the events but will be outside the giant range of hurling or getting up there once shapeshifting back
If bat-form can reach this this turn normally Drakh acts something else too, if not then the bat-form dashes and end turn
Simon N. (GM):You're currently about 60' from the giants.
Jorian Drake:OK, Drakh positions himself at least 120 feet from them, so probably I spend all my action/movement in bat form to find a good and far sniping location,
Simon N. (GM):The road is 100' wide, steep cliffs rising up on either side here
Jorian Drake:on top of a steep cliff
end turn
Simon N. (GM):You can go perch on the eastern cliffs

Jorian Drake:I'd prefer something 500 ft away but that would take so long the combat would end before batman even flaps there
Simon N. (GM):2 giants are moving to encircle Mal raising clubs while 2 heft rocks and look up at Q-lemental
with the wind up here few ranged attacks would reach 500' anyway.
Quillax:She'll throw some produce flames
Simon N. (GM):The giants seem unnerved by Malassandra (due to her 33 Intimidate) :D
Malassandra:(Not that unnerved! :D )
Simon N. (GM):OK Q has to do a trench attack run coming w/in 30' of her target to throw flames

Jorian Drake:(Can Quillax still transform into something to flee?)
Claw:"your next!"
Simon N. (GM):The body staggers back and thunks onto the ancient roadway, eldritch axe flying from his hand.
Claw:He moves to the nearest one
(is it in attackm rrange?
Jorian Drake:(wait, maybe they follow yClaw now, you won the duel!)
Simon N. (GM):You did 220 to him and he had 215 :)
Claw:xD
Quillax:OK, I've got one panic spell I can use, I was going to save it, but I might have to use it

#12 Drak your go
Drakhaien (WIP) summons Nightgaunts. 1d4+1 using the black, horned nightgaunt mask's power the creatures leave the surface of the dark mask. Drakh telepathically commands some of these to fend off the giants near his dead companion so the other nightgaunts can focus on grab & run with the corpse of Mal and allow Q to either flee or also take her to his cliff if she's not too heavy, then bonus action hides.

Drakh donned the mask on our last rest
but right, I doN't know the creature stats either
Jorian Drake:(this is the only way I was able to think of for Drakh to try rescue you folks)
Malassandra:(Good effort, I just worry about how far they have to travel?)
Jorian Drake:(Stay preferably alive till they get there)
Simon N. (GM):GM: ok range 90' I'll say, & 1 action to summon (it's 1 minute for most 5e conjurations).
Quillax:(question, does Mal count as an object or a willing person when unconscious? )
Jorian Drake:(Yes, it is an action, I used the mask summon before already)
Quillax:(it doesn't matter really, just curious :D)
Malassandra::D
Jorian Drake:(I think a corpse counts as object yep, jsut a piece of dead meat :D)
Malassandra:(Dhe's not dead yet)
Quillax:(she's not dead. She's unconscious)
Malassandra:heheheh
Simon N. (GM):actually sorry spell is in Primeval Thule book, range is 30' for summon nightgaunt, 1 action, acts after you on your turn
concentration/1 minute
Malassandra:1 dearh save to go yet!
Jorian Drake:I didn't know it acts as a spell after their summon, ok
Drakh has nothing else to concentrate on currently so it's fine
I think the mask wrote either 1 nightgaunt for 24 hours, or like the 1d4+1 for ten minutes
Simon N. (GM):Nightgaunts swoop out of the darkness & fly towards the fray (move + dash 40+40 = 80'); they arrive above the battle)
1d4+1 for 11 rounds it says
which is pretty much the 5e 1 minute
yes you can use it to summon a single NG for 24 hrs
Jorian Drake:(OK, then, I see I have to write these old loot items stats down separately, I know in the past I just used your site Simon to find the info but now my browse-fu failed)
Simon N. (GM):(not sure if I converted it on the site)
Jorian Drake:(anyway, 11 rounds should be enough for a lucky escape :D )
Simon N. (GM):R5 #21 Quillax
BTW your telepathic range to the NGs is 90' Drak so you can't give them new commands beyond that range
Malassandra:Good luck Keelia!
Quillax:Q taps Mal with a cure wounds, then takes EE form and rolls over on top of her again, trusting Claw to draw the fire and her own rocky body to help survive until Mal is conscious and can run on her own.

Malassandra:okay.
Quillax:Q isn't squishing her, there's room to move and crawl out if she wants :)
Malassandra:phew
Simon N. (GM):"Pound him!" "Pulp him!" "Grind him!"
Jorian Drake:(Well.... I can't help anyone as long an elemental stops the nightgaunts from potentially escape with Mal)
Claw:"Ya'll welcome to try "

Simon N. (GM):GM; Frankly Mal is much better off NOT getting up right now. :D
but I'll retcon if you are SURE >:D
Quillax:She's got a 146 hp shield and an angry barbarian :D
Malassandra:hehe
Claw:always equip a barbarian meat shield
Malassandra:It's not in her nature to lay down on the job though :)
Claw:never leave home without one
Simon N. (GM):GM: If Mal is standing up the giants try to finish her off
oh & the opp att rule for standing :p
Seriously I think Q would be wise enough to stop her getting up!

(From Jorian Drake): [whispered] If this is the correct 5e Nightgaunt stat sheet, then there's still hope, please check it and I'd command 2 of them to use Baleful Presence on the giants (so all or almost all of them have to try save against it) while the other 3 use flyby multiattacks https://www.5esrd.com/gamemastering/monsters-foes/monsters-by-type/aberrations/nightgaunt/

Or "attack them"

Simon N. (GM):#12 Drak your turn; your nightgaunts are 40' from the giants and your friends. Q & M are prone, you can just see M's shield under Q
Drakhaien (WIP):(and I know they can fly with people, I used that before already, months ago)
All right
Simon N. (GM):You don't need their stat block to give them telepathic commands

I thought I made clear to go as high and far as possible to get out of it
Simon N. (GM):The giants' mistake was wasting time pounding on Q in EE form, should have dragged her off Mal & CDG'd Mal. Even then Claw would have tore through them eventually I reckon
You said how far you were going.
Jorian Drake:You said how far those cliffs are where Drakh could go
Simon N. (GM):You could have kept flying away several rounds if you wanted, your choice

Claw:sse you then!
Jorian Drake:Simon my bow range is 600 feet
Malassandra:Yes, thanks Simon. Very exciting!
Simon N. (GM):I told you the high wind reduced the max range
Jorian Drake:and for msot of my attack spells the range is 240 feet

Simon N. (GM):240' would have been ok, still in range of the giants though
Claw:right i'm off, cya guys next week, thanks agagin Simon
Simon N. (GM):bye J

Malassandra:@DM I assume M has healed to full?
Simon N. (GM):yes M can heal up
I'll stop there as half the players left :)
can question giant next time
Malassandra:Jorian, ask Dan, he uses tokens.
Thanks again for an exciting session. Stay safe all.
Simon N. (GM):cheers Chris
bye now
Malassandra:bye
Jorian Drake:One more thing Simon. WIth all due respect, Druids know exactly what their summoned animals and fey can do, Drakhaien already met the Nightgaunts and used them before, and has a passive Arcana of 25. He should know already what Nightgaunts are like, also he's attuned with soul to that summoning mask, and as you mentioned you haven't fully converted some items and creatures yet, so I think my whispered request to please help me with them was justified. I didn't want to argue, just know what exactly and how is supposed to work with this as I didn't find the data on your website.
Bye Chris
Malassandra:Enjoy your GoT game Jorian, see you tomorrow
Jorian Drake:cya
