ep 107 21/3/4720 AR Xin-Shalast - The Kuchrima

Simon N. (GM):GM: end of last session you defeated the giant sentries and captured one cloud giant. He looks fearful but resigned.
Chris T.:Took me 3 months to get over the Bath to Haworth move!
Is the Giant speaking common?
or will M have to translate?
Simon N. (GM):>>Q barrels into the one being attacked by nightgaunts and bludgeons it to the ground. It stops moving.
#20 Mal. The last giant looks around at his fallen brethren, his face goes ashen.
"Er... truce?"
Malassandra:"Lay down your arms!"
Simon N. (GM):He drops his club, raising both hands.
OK you're out of combat, well done :)
Simon N. (GM):Malassandra:She scrambles to her feet recovering as much dignity as she can.<<
Chris T.:(Also we have a rune axe to collect from the frost gint?)
Simon N. (GM):It speaks Giant.7
the frost giant had a +3 huge great axe
JamesDevil:J Claw speaks giant
Chris T.:M will translate using her helm.
or Claw can :)
JamesDevil:"He's scared"
Chris T.:"Does he know the way in to the city through the caves?"
JamesDevil:"You, do you know the way in?"
Simon N. (GM):"To the city? Follow the yellow brick road." he points down the road. "Not far."
Chris T.::)
JamesDevil:"You lead"
Simon N. (GM):"The Rune Giants will kill me for surrendering to you."
Quillax:(Q keeps a suspicous eye on the the sky for falling houses :) )
Q takes a moment to check the bodies for Rune Marks
JamesDevil:" Lead us until we are close, then we will let you go free
you have my word"#
Simon N. (GM):He nods resignedly. "They will find me and kill me. They always do."
He turns and beckons you to follow him along the road.
JamesDevil:"They'll be too busy with us to look for you"
Claw smiles
Simon N. (GM):GM: Q finds Greed marks on the necks of the fallen giants.
Quillax:"Is there a back way in?"
Chris T.:M 184/184HP
Simon N. (GM):"No." You continue along the winding gorge. Two miles later...
JamesDevil:"we will manage
Simon N. (GM):XIN-SHALAST
This tableau defies belief. A narrow mountain pass
opens into a glacial valley extending north and
then turning to the west at the base of the vast
mountain at the far end. Filling this valley is an icecapped
city of enormous proportions. The near
Simon N. (GM):end is mostly blocked by a huge fortress of smooth
black stone, with multiple towers rising from its
high walls. Exiting the bailey of this fortress is a
massive causeway of gold that dominates the city
as it travels down the center of the vale. Enormous
towers and spires of many-colored stone pack
Simon N. (GM):both sides of the central thoroughfare, rising to
prodigious heights and giving the illusion that the
road itself is a valley. The eastern slope of the valley
has been partially subsumed by an ancient volcanic
flow—nearly a quarter of the city appears to have
been so buried. That section is now little more
Simon N. (GM):than a great mass of ice, with the jagged angles
and peaks of ruined structures poking through
its topmost layer here and there. Where the
valley curves slightly to the west, the structures,
if anything, grow even larger, becoming truly
gigantic as they climb up and over the rocky spur.
Simon N. (GM):At the far end of the valley, the city abuts the lower
slope of a truly massive peak. Yet the city builders
appear to have taken no heed of this change in
slope, for the great causeway merely elevates at a
steep angle and continues to climb the incline in a
nearly straight line, transforming into an immense
Simon N. (GM):stairway. Additional buildings cling precariously
to the mountain face alongside the causeway,
growing even larger and more impressive as they
ascend. The gigantic buildings finally give way
a few thousand feet above, but the mighty road
continues to wend its treacherous way to just
Simon N. (GM):below the mountain’s peak. There, a spired citadel
looms, its size and proportions truly magnificent.
It, too, fails to summit the mountain—instead,
its topmost spires end just below the dominant
face of a stern man, carved into the peak of the
mountain and surveying the city below
Simon N. (GM):The
otherworldly quality of this strange panorama is
further reinforced by the sound of the cold winds
slicing across the high peaks, making strange cries
and shrieks in the thin mountain air..
JamesDevil:"hmm"
We'd have to kill alot of giants to reach the souce of greed"
Chris T.:"Phew!"
JamesDevil:"Q will you mist form be able to get us to that citidel?"
Simon N. (GM):https://s3.amazonaws.com/files.d20.io/images/113918574/aO4s0jkw2bEcLdCz1UM7Mg/max.jpg?1585422394769
Chris T.:"We should kill as few as we may."
Quillax:She considers, "Depends if there is anywhere safe to land. It takes a long time to reform..."
Chris T.:(Nice picture)
JamesDevil:"Perhaps if we can land just behind the Head on the mountain, out of the winds perhaps"
Quillax:The danger comes from their anti-magic or their magic.
Simon N. (GM):Giant: "Can I go now?"
Chris T.:"Aye we were told we could not enter from above?"
JamesDevil:"you may leave yes, gos speed to you"
Simon N. (GM):The giant nods, turns, and runs off down the pass.
Jorian Drake:(Just want to say, already last session I replaced the spell list Greater Invisibility for Fabricate, before I forget to mention it again)
Chris T.:Are there any signs of movement?
Simon N. (GM):GM: Quillax can tell that the valley itself is sheltered enough to make Wind Walk possible if she stays low enough, but the exposed upper city climbing the Mhar Massif to the high spires is likely too windy to not be blown away.
Quillax:She relays that to the others. We can get part-way
Chris T.:"Better part of the way. Every creature less that we kill is less power for Karzoug."
Simon N. (GM):The place sems quiet from what you can see, but there are a few fire smokes here and there, thicker towards the middle of the city.
The city could hold hundreds of thousands, but it seems unlikely there's more than a few thousand here currently.
Quillax:"Then when ready, I will cast WindWalk."
Chris T.:M nods her readyness.
JamesDevil:"indeed, the sooner we get to the source, thew fewer we have to kill"
Simon N. (GM):PP 25+ spots some harpy like creatures wheeling above the fortress that guards the city entrance.
JamesDevil:Claw nods at Q
Drakhaien (WIP):Drakh points the harpy out
Chris T.:Mal squints, assuring herself that she doesn't need spectacles yet.
Simon N. (GM):https://live.staticflickr.com/8318/8061429321_b2c068de20_b.jpg - bit like an armless vrock. You can roll Religion or Arcana to ID it DC 25

JamesDevil:yea, Claw isn't even going to try :P
Chris T.:yay
Simon N. (GM):Q IDs them as Kuchrimas, a kind of horrible Lamia.
Vile and wicked.
You can see three.
Drakhaien (WIP):How far away?
Simon N. (GM):1/4 mile roughly to the fortress
Claw:yay for eagle sight i can see that far clearly ^^
Drakhaien (WIP):( 1 quarter mile...)
Simon N. (GM):Can you see where I wrote Fortress and Camp Smokes on map?
Chris T.:yes
Quillax:(yes, in red)
Claw:yep
Simon N. (GM):about 1500 feet
Jorian Drake:(thanks for feet measure)
Simon N. (GM):Beyond the fortress the smoke trails grow thick
Claw:"we need to bypass that fortress somehow"
"otherwise the whole city will come down on us"
Simon N. (GM):There is a road running west of the fortress, but overlooked by it.
Drakhaien (WIP):Drakh draws clouds in the dirt
Simon N. (GM):The roads on map are 75' wide and rise in banks up to 50'- 100' above the ground.
Claw:"Q, if we take that path(the one runnign west), could you perhps provide some cloud cover?"
Simon N. (GM):The whole city is about 8 miles long.
ie it's about 8 miles to the spires at the far end below the mountain peak.
Quillax:She shakes her head. "I didn't bring anything for cloud cover."
Drakhaien (WIP):Drakh draws stick people in the dirt beside the coulds, then an arrow back and forth between the clouds and figures
Claw:"ok, i'm not seeing many options her, thoughts people?"
Simon N. (GM):drawn X for your current location, 1 square = 750 feet
Chris T.:"Perhaps I could draw off these flying demons on Thunder while you lot sneak past?"
Quillax:"Best I can do is Wind Walk. We can make it to the base of the upper city. That puts us in range of the Kuchrimas, but anything higher will cause the wind forms to possibly disintegrate"
Drakhaien (WIP):Drakh nods, points to his bow then to the flying creatures
then writes '600ft' as well on ground
Quillax:From that point, we'd have to hoof it. My Air Elemental form should hold up, Thunder may or may not depend on the gusts, but not sure how we'd get the rest of you airborne."
Simon N. (GM):Claw you note that the Kuchrima carry bows in their taloned feet.
look like composite longbows.
Chris T.:"Just get us as close as you can, Lasy Quillax. It's up to us to do the rest."
Claw:"hitting those vile creature won't work, they have ranged attacks"
Drakhaien (WIP):Drakh points again at '600ft' on ground
Chris T.:the range of his bow
?
Quillax:Q pauses. "I could try to polymorph one of you into Kuchrima...or something else with wings to get up close, but it runs the risk of you dropping like a stone or being 3 on 1"
Chris T.:He wanrs us to get to 600' away so he can shoot arrows at them?
Drakhaien (WIP):Drakh draws a vague form of a creature, a stick figure with bow, the bow being shot, then the flying creature coming after the wowman, and another drawing where allies of the stickman pop up to fight the lone bird creature
bowman*
Quillax:"puts us at a huge disadvantage. They can keep 600 away and just pick us off."
Claw:We'd need them on the ground for this to work
Chris T.:"Except Drak can outrange them?"
Simon N. (GM):GM They are Monstrosities so I don't think you can Polymorph someone into them?

Drakhaien (WIP):Drakh shrugs and signals maybe
(DM: can Drakh use his at-will greater invisibility in mask too?)
Simon N. (GM):ok you can tell the wind will reduce effective bow range to about 300'.
Quillax:(oh, it does say any beast, so I guess not into them(
Chris T.:that will effect their bow fitr too
Simon N. (GM):>>(DM: can Drakh use his at-will greater invisibility in mask too?)<< Yes, why not?
Drakhaien (WIP):ok!
Drakh disappears, then reappers among the others with bow reidied, shrugs again and lowers bow
Simon N. (GM):currently 2 kuchrima have landed and are out of sight in the fortress.
Quillax:"Well, I can get us close with Wind Walk, if you want to try to take the one down by bow versus bow, we can try it."
Simon N. (GM):The wind shifts to northerly, and from the fortress you catch a barnyard smell, like a herd of cooped up cows or sheep & a lack of adequate sanitation :)
Drakhaien (WIP):Drakh nods and gives a thumbs up
Claw:"ok, lets get close, then do your think Drak
Quillax:Q casts the spell, just before she warns them to stay low and hidden as possible
Drakhaien (WIP):Drakh steps closer for the cloud spell
Simon N. (GM):ok Q casts wind walk to turn you all into clouds
Chris T.:M complies
Simon N. (GM):https://roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Wind%20Walk#content
Drakhaien (WIP):(is it daytime?)
Simon N. (GM):It's pre-dawn, light is brightening the eastern sky. Thin cloud scudding overhead, currently north to south.
Drakhaien (WIP):Drakh will calculate the disatances and hover to somewhere in 590ft from the flying creatures he can see closest, a position the othjers may be able to land on too in humanoid form

Claw:thats the plan
Drakhaien (WIP):the cliffs on the side should probably offer a place with covver for transformation, hopefully
Simon N. (GM):GM: OK you fly in cloud form up the valley towards the fortress - the Kuchrima are noted for their alertness and keen sight, and you are flying against the wind, so they spot your approach. There is the BANG of a thunderstone alarm and more Kuchrima rise up from the fortress.
Drakhaien (WIP):Drakh looks for the closest ideal landing spot
Simon N. (GM):A dozen Kuchrima fly towards you, bows ready.
Claw:sigh
Simon N. (GM):You can land right below using the buildings for cover.
Chris T.:That sounds good
Claw:We'll have too yea
Quillax:Q zooms down and disappears into a building to reform.
Drakhaien (WIP):dash/bonus action dash
Claw:Claw does the same
Simon N. (GM):OK you head down between two large slope-roofed buildings, Q finds a glassless window and leads you inside.
Chris T.:Once on the ground M loks for suitable cover where she can watch from.
Drakhaien (WIP):We first have to re-transform, drakh does that in the corner of that room
Simon N. (GM):Who is turning back to normal form? Rem 10 rounds incapacitated
Drakhaien (WIP):I can't really do anything else
Chris T.:M will. Best start sooner than later?
Claw:If Claw is in a house he will
Drakhaien (WIP):Right, they just began to come at us, we may have a couple rounds befoe they reach us, plus Q may be able to keep them busy
Simon N. (GM):GM: OK you all fly into the upper floor of the nearest building (might have been a customs house) and begin changing back. Yes?

Simon N. (GM):Lucky :)
OK you are now at 2nd X
The building roof is gold plated BTW!
Drakhaien (WIP):great for electricity
Claw:Ooo nice
Simon N. (GM):fortress is about 900' away - "The ruined road branches here, a narrower
route leading around to the west while the main
thoroughfare passes through a looming stone
wall flanked by glossy black towers. It seems
to be some sort of ancient gateway to the city
proper. A dark mass of gritty, rocky ice presses
Simon N. (GM):up against the fortress’s northern face, the
ancient lava flow apparently stopped (but only
just) by the stone walls.
This is Krak Naratha, a huge fortress that guards
the entrance to the valley of Xin-Shalast. Its walls are
50 feet thick and rise to a height of 75 feet. The square
Simon N. (GM):towers extend as high as 200 feet. Krak Naratha is
composed of volcanic glass harvested from the caldera
east of the valley, its roof and edges once gilt in gold
but now only retaining splashes of color. Its joint
seams are very f ine and almost invisible in the dark
stone. Climbing the walls requires a successful DC 40
Simon N. (GM):Climb check.
The gates of Krak Naratha fell long ago, leaving an
empty gatehouse to provide entry to its bailey. The
former garrison blockhouse has partially collapsed,
as has much of the northeastern wall. The ancient
volcanic eruption did signif icant damage to these
Simon N. (GM):structures, but not enough to completely destroy them.
A smaller gate to the east of the ruined blockhouse
once opened into the Slave District, but this is now
blocked by a mass of ice. Anyone climbing the tower
stairs up to the fortress’s rear wall can easily descend
onto the surface of the lava f low (which lies only 8 feet
Simon N. (GM):below the ramparts).
OK you begin changing back

Drakhaien (WIP):Not sure how good their eyes are, they are obviously very good to spot us in cloud form from half a mile or so away, so Drakh first uses action to use his Greater Invisibility power, then disengange to be certain and move outside the room invisibly and to be away from these monsters

Simon N. (GM):4d6 for first floor. 8d6 for 2nd - falling is bad IMC, though not like Matt Mercer I saw him on Critical Role give a PC 100d6 fall dmg!
Quillax:She'll move to the base of the stairs but won't move up them until she takes a different form.
Drakhaien (WIP):(Yeah Mercer uses his own rules)
Simon N. (GM):OK Q moves out into the hallway, looking up the stairs can see 30' up a kuchrima clawing at the air :)

That was Kelith
Simon N. (GM):yup!
(Q you just had enough move to enter the hall, about 15' from base of stairs)
OK Round 2 - Drak - you see a groggy Quillax earth elemental emerge from a doorway 45' away in the lower hall.
Drakhaien (WIP):bonus action Hide, and action Disengage so that Drakh can finally escape to a safe place unnoticed, hopefully one where the creatures can't run into invisibile Drakhaien. Perhaps if there's a window he could hang off it invisibily on the outside for a round to avoid this risk
Passive stealth now 29 because the -5 from Poisoned disadv on skill ([2x7]+4+6=24 -5 is 19, plus 10 is 29 for passive)

Your ACs are not great for Epic-20
would be why you're getting pincushioned
& they have really big quivers :)
Quillax:I have an important question. Unconscious, does Mal count as an Object. This is very important.
Simon N. (GM):no
Quillax:(I sort of need her to, damn)
If we put Mal in a bag of holding for a few moments, would she survive?
Chris T.:honestly guyd if you need to flee no hard feelings
Simon N. (GM):no, but she could go in a portable hole
Quillax:(Chris, I make it a point not to leave anyone behind)
Simon N. (GM):bag only holds 25 lb
Chris T.::)
Quillax:(does anyone have a portable hole?)
Simon N. (GM):sorry I'm wrong I think
500 lbs but max dimension 4'
Claw:I have 4 bags :P
Simon N. (GM):so you could technically get a halfling or gnome in
Claw:One limb each xD
Quillax:Mal would fit into 4' cube easily
OK. I need just a minute to think. I'm going to type.
Simon N. (GM):Well maybe you could smush her in. Would take a while
Quillax:If I do a stone wall, I can wrap Claw and Mal in it and anchor it in the ground
If we pretend Drak is a bat, that should be fine. Even if the stone drops, it's fine, I just need it to survive for one round.
Then round 2, Claw puts Mal into bag (and Drak-bat) and Q does dimension door in EE form. Then Claw is smaller and we can portal out
Simon N. (GM):Can't you D-door this round?
Quillax:I can only take 1 person.
Drakhaien (WIP):Drakh is not a bat currently and low on health as well
Quillax:"You can bring along objects as long as their weight doesn’t exceed what you can carry. You can also bring one willing creature of your size or smaller who is carrying gear up to its carrying capacity. The creature must be within 5 feet of you when you cast this spell."
Simon N. (GM):I'm not seeing getting human into bag as a 1 round action.
Claw:can she use a bonuss to strzp mal to me?
Simon N. (GM):I'd allow it for gnome or halfling I guess
Quillax:I saw it as a scoop action :)
Simon N. (GM):Mal's dead body would be an object so you could just wait a bit :p
Quillax:I was hoping to avoid that :D
OK, the only other thing I can do is plane shift and hope like hell we end up on a good plane.
Simon N. (GM):Wall of Stone must be firmly anchored for spell to work so that's no good.
Chris T.::D
Simon N. (GM):Plane Shift sounds fun. >:D
Claw:go onsmn, rule of cool >:)
Chris T.:(Love Keelia's fighting spirit!)
Simon N. (GM):ok what is Q doing?
do you have a tuning fork? To what plane?
Quillax:I guess the only other thing I can do is lay down a nuke. It could kill everyone tho.
I know I have at least one tuning fork but I can't remember to which plane it was. I know I have a fork to get back to my home
Simon N. (GM):prob to the astral
as you've been there
Quillax:How does everyone feel about a trip to the astral plane ?
Claw:All for it
Chris T.:In your hands. I trust which ever call you make
Simon N. (GM):Q can't see Drak but she could touch Mal & Claw for spell
Claw:(Claw will be angry that he wan't able to die in battle taking his enemy down with him ofc
Simon N. (GM):Drak can prob sneak out ok anyway if he's careful
Quillax:Drak still has wind walk. As long as he can hide for 1 min, he's got it for another 8 hours. Double move will get him out.
She'll shout for him as she speeds for Mal and Claw. If he can grab Mal or Claw, then he'll get taken with the spell.
Simon N. (GM):He's not in grab range so would take another round which is LOTS of arrows
OK Quillax grabs Mal & Claw and Plane Shifts?
Quillax:Yes.
Simon N. (GM):There is a flash of light as the trio plunge across the cosmos... and a weird sickening wrenching sensation...
Claw:Claw turns to Q
Simon N. (GM):A moment later Quillax and Claw find themselves standing, not in the starry vastness of the astral sea, but on a dusty gray wasteland. Stars blink overhead, alien yet familiar, and a few miles off a gargantuan Watcher, hundreds of feet tall, turns to stare its jackal-gaze in your direction.
Claw:"Why did you do that? we we're winng!"
Simon N. (GM):Mal lies beneath you. Welcome back to Leng!
